Can anyone recommend a spare wheel bike carrier for 3 bikes that they know is good and will fit around a 265/75/16 ?
Thanks Mike |

Personally I wouldn't touch them, because the back door on a Defender is flimsy enough as it is, so the last thing it needs is 3 bikes hanging on it.
Towbar-mounted ones give better stability anyway. Even the fairly cheap (<£100) Thule ones have a flip-down function, meaning you can (partially) open the back door with the bikes on the rack. |

Good point, i never thought of that as they were just going to be kids bikes, but at the same time any added weight will rattle that thing even more than normal ! I have a Nas Rear step with tow ball so i'll maybe have a look for something that will connect to that. Thanks |

I'll find a picture of mine later - I bought it from a supplier over the web and it was the only one I could find designed to fit a Defender rear door with 265 on. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

Just been looking at the Thule 3 bike one which attaches to the tow bar:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...yId_165515 And I was wondering if anyone has this one and has used it. What are the benefits/disadvantages of this one vs the one in the thread posted above which comes up higher? Will the rear door open a reasonable amount with it on full tilt (and possibly on lowest hitch point - doesn't bother me where the tow bar is these days since I'm not doing a whole amount of towing) Thinking of buying within the week as well for a coast to coast attempt! Appreciate any help! |

Hi xatzhs
I am on the look out for one as well. Its is worth looking at the Thule website and then going through the 'will it fit my car' guide. The one you noted is not one that is compatible with a Defender, the ones that are listed require the 'offroad' adapter which reduces the number of bikes on the carrier by one, ie a three bike carrier is reduced to carrying two bikes. This is due to the rear upright bar being angled to get past the spare wheel. Not sure if you can get round this by putting the spare wheel in the back. Again it would be good to hear of peoples experience of the Thule set up and with pictures would be good. Mark |
