I've seen the various kits available for after market Daylight Running lights but have a question for which I can't find an answer.
As I understand the law, DRLs can be up to 21watts, must only be activated when the ignition is on,and must be extinguished the normal lighting is being used. The first two bits are easily achievable through using an ignition feed. However, the only way I see to comply with the third requirement is a manual off switch. I would have thought that there would a relay available which automatically cuts power to the DRLs when power is fed to the front lights? Does anyone know if such a really is available, or do people with after market DRLs rely upon remembering to switch them off when the normal lights are required? |

The Hella ones I have do it automatically. There are two wires (fed through the bulkhead) - one to the cigarette lighter fuse for "ignition turn on" and the other to the sidelight fuse for "lights turn off". They were a bit more expensive than simple LED units but simple to wire up and great quality

speak to Tim at mobilecentre.
the kit they sell uses the front side lights as drls so no need for them to go out when main lights are used. got a kit on order myself. Take a look at Kens picture gallery, i believe he has them |

Aren't the standard Defender sidelights rather weak or can you upgrade them e.g. with LEDs? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

They are definitely not dim
Do you know where they take the "ignition on" power from? I had to go through the bulkhead to the fuse-box as no-one here knew of a suitable source in the engine compartment. I've the mobilecentre ones and despite some great wiring diagrams from k9f (thx Mal) and hunting round the engine bay I ended up taking the lead off the radio ignition on.

Looks like I'll leave mine alone then (was considering rewiring to tidy up the fuse-box). Pity... Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I changed my front side lights to NAS type reversing lights with a 21/5 watt inside. These were supplied by Bolt on Bits, also the rear connector so you can wire in the standard side lights and the new 21 watt ones.
Then I stuck a relay in, connected to the reversing one (that gives power on indication) and ran a wire to the front into another relay that is operated by the side lights. So the DRLs come on with the ignition and are turned off by the side lights. Merlin |

I'm thick - I admit it
I didn't get the bit "connected to the reversing one (that gives power on indication)" - is there a live feed at the back that comes on with the ignition? That would be very interesting for other projects... Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

The reversing relay, situated under the passenger’s seat (if the Land Rover fitting guide has been followed) provides a live (12+) feed to the white socket (called the 12S) by the tow bar (on terminal 6). This is sometimes referred to as the S relay.
That’s where I took the 12v from, as it’s only there when the ignition is on. Merlin |

Thanks. I wondered about that too but a work colleague warned me against possible "voltage spikes" - could be b*llocks but sounded feasible at the time (I also wanted the lights on without the engine running...)
