Terrafirma & other makes of power plug
Ez to fit for higher torque at lower rpm is what I want, but not enough to bend the drive shaft etc through a careless gear change. Whistle

What are the yays & nays to this option, price apart? Neutral Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

Are you meaning a "tuning box"? If so get a proper remap, not a plug-in box.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I understand what you are all saying BUT:-

1. Warranty - You have to be able to take the remap off if you are going to a dealership - so you have to have that ability available if you travel away from home and suffer a breakdown that requires a trip to a dealership.
2. You have to have access to a Windoze computer - I only use Apple computers - if you get your remaps via email etc:

Maybe when I'm out of warranty and can determine where I go when I have a breakdown and callout the AA then I can visit one of the sponsors for a remap, or if they produce a Mac version of their software. Until then I would only consider one of these Plug & Play boxes. Bow down LANDYWATCH

A tuning box can never match a true remap. Tuning boxes fool the ECU and engine into operating different to what each other "thinks" - i.e. it's a box which modifies signals going both ways to trick them.

At its crudest, this is simply a resistor to lower the rail pressure signal to the ECU, so the ECU raises it as it doesn't match its set point. Higher diesel pressure means more diesel injected per firing, but it takes NO account of the other engine parameters required to determine if this is a good idea or not.

These parameters can include but are not limited to fuel temperature, boost pressure, engine temperature, driver driver, inlet air temperature, charge temperature, air flow, gearbox gear, EGR state... [etc]

A remap does increase fuelling, but by altering the maps which are read as a result of looking at all these other parameters FIRST. A tuning box lets the ECU work out where it should be operating, and then just bungs some on top, and lies in return.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I've tried 2 (glutton for punishment) tuning boxes and both were horrible - first was 80 Euro (sent it back) and second was 250 Euro (sent it back).

You're right about initially needing a Windoze computer (annoying) to load the maps on the console but it's not so hard to find/pay/blackmail some poor PC user to help (I use Bootcamp). However, once that's done, the (e.g. Alive and BAS) console can be kept in your car and used to load either of 2 remaps or replace with the original map in a few minutes.

Sure, in a catastrophic crash I would not be able to reload the original map... but I probably wouldn't be in a position to climb around and remove a tuning box either Sad Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Martin summed it up well. DOn't waste your money on plug in boxes or any 'generic' mapping. It's worth getting a proper remap done tailored to your needs and vehicle by a specialist. John
