I had a car with a slipping clutch once that was actually caused by leaking clutch fluid.

Check the fuel pressure regulator that is on the back of the cylinder head, if leaking will get small diesel on clutch that makes it slip.

FPR Leaking or rear output shaft seal leaking could both be causing it to slip, or the clutch could be gone, if you can borrow a borascope or small camera it may be worth removing the plugs from the gearbox and having a look inside to see if anything is leaking or the state of the clutch.
By removing the bell house bolt you will also be able to inspect it for oil or clutch fluid. Jason. |

If the clutch plate has been contaminated by diesel from a leaking FPR, is it toast or does it just burn off?
Also, I would assume if the FPR was leaking, I'd be able to smell diesel too, which I can't. I shall do some investigation later, need to get the christmas tree first 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

The diesel will just burn off.
No you can't smell the diesel, I did not. Even if you look at the bottom of the bell housing you will think you have a small oil leak as the diesel has washed the back of the engine making it black. You may find more diesel, or oil by taking out the wading plug that is in the bottom of the bell housing, but make sure you poke something up the hole as normaly it is sealed inside from , there is also a small hole next to the wade plug, but this is often also blocked, I clear mine by poking cable tie up it each service. When clutch was slipping due to fpr leaking it was worse after low engine speed stuff, followed by high speed. This is due to the fpr returning so much more fuel when not driven hard, then slipping when power applied. Next place to look is rocker box gasket at rear of engine, and clutch pedal adjustment. Do you have a bit of free travel at top pedal? Andy |

Right, have been out to take a look in the daylight:
The Master cylinder is dry, there are no leaks that I can see and the reservoir is full: Click image to enlarge The slave cylinder is also dry and shows no signs of leakage: Click image to enlarge The pedal travel has a little bit of play at the top, but then the pressure is good to the floor. I still don't get why the clutch bites so short off the floor. It should be gradual, but it's almost snatching. When looking at the Fuel Pressure Regulator I can see it is wet in that area. It doesn't smell of diesel at all when I get it on my fingers. You can see in the picture below the fuel temperature sender's cable sheath is full of whatever the liquid is (maybe diesel and oil mix). It almost looks like a slight oil leak from the rear of the rocker gasket. Where does the Fuel Temp cable go to? Presumably if the sheathing is filling up with fuel/oil this is going somewhere? Click image to enlarge Question: If the FPR is leaking, how will this affect performance and how does it even get to the clutch plate at all? (I'm not convinced this is the cause but I'd happily be told I'm wrong) Is a replacement FPR the solution to a leaking FPR and is it a DIY job or best left to a garage? 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

When the FPR leaks, it drips into the join of the bellhousing and the rear of the engine.... the fuel seeps through the join (it's that tin plate you can see that bolts to the aluminium bellhousing) DIY job.... undo the fuel pipes, undo 3 bolts, remove & refit. If you google it there's quite a few tech articles showing you how. easier on a defender than a disco as there's more room to fit your hands in. |

I've been reading lots of threads on TD5 clutch pedals, and it seems that for the bite to be so close to the floor is extremely common.
I'd love to know what exactly Nene did when they fitted a clutch kit, and what parts were involved. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

DIY job to fix clutch slave and master cylinder if you have good parts LR or TWR and not cheep OM
1. master cylinder leak down on to the pedal 2. the slave cylinder will leak in the bell housing 3. if you are unlucky and DOT4 is on clutch plate |

Ask them for a copy of the workshop notes, they would have to account for the parts somehow. 2002 Defender 110 DC |
