Charge battery through 13 pin trailer socket
Can someone advise what pins to connect to charge the battery via a 13 pin trailer plug please?

I've not been using my Defender so much recently and the alarm sounded when I started it today. I've read that this indicates a lower voltage in the battery. I want to plug a charger to the battery via my 13 pin trailer socket - saves lifting the passenger seat. I'll connect a trailer plug to the battery charger and then to a 220v supply. For the connections I'm happy that the ground is white number 3, but I'm not sure whether to take the power from orange number 9 or grey number10 in the attached diagrams. I'd be grateful for some informed help.

I used to have the same problem with the alarm, from lack of use. But I have a 7 pin, so no permanent positive available.

Since I have working lights, and an additional fuse box with spare connections in the battery compartment, I rigged a wire with a 2 pin female connector, fused at 10A as the battery charger I use max is 8A. The battery charger crocodile clips were cut off, and male 2 pin connector attached. This way, I can easy charge the battery (have a smart charger, so technically I can leave it connected 247) without the need of pulling the seat base off.

The crocodile clips that were chopped off also got a 2 pin female connector, so I can use the charger on any other car.

To answer your question, I think you should use pin 9 for +12V. You can also check with a meter (or if you do not have a meter, just a 12V bulb with 2 wires attached) to ensure you have 12V between pin 3 and 9. With the bulb trick, you lack confirmation of the polarity though. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I use Martins one too, with a Ctek charger, and it works perfectly to keep the battery topped up. during lockdown, I managed to completely discharge the battery - to the point where the central locking wouldn’t work. Plugging in the Ctek via Martins 13 pin plug revived the battery perfectly. Dave

Pin 9 is direct to battery. Easy way to check is with a volt meter of course and makes sure that the wiring is correct and that the 20A fuse hasn’t blown. Dave

I've recently started to question charging via the towing socket rather than direct connections to the battery.

I've seen signs of increased galvanic corrosion in the usual places and wonder if having the vehicle charger wired this way is actually a factor?

My vehicle is left permanently plugged into a CTEK charger when parked up; and you can see the corrosion oozing from the unpainted rivets behind the rear door. Clean them up and the deposits appear again over a period of time.

Indeed, galvanic corrosion is a problem on boats connected to onshore power and some owners fit galvanic isolators which reduce rather than eliminate corrosion. I understand you can totally eliminate it but then that type of isolator is very expensive.

Back to Defenders, like Supacat I keep mine connected to a Ctek when parked and haven't noticed any corrosion like that shown in the photo. I will however be having a close look at it Exclamation Defender 90XS SW
