if its only a small leak its probably not too much to worry about! changing the seals is not difficult but it is a bit of a time consuming job! Are your swivel balls pitted? sometimes this can cause them to leak, sometimes there is a little bit of excessive play in the king pin bearings which can make them leak, this can sometimes be cured by removing some of the shims at the top of the bearing

What age is the vehicle? Most recent Defenders have grease not oil in the swivel housings (those that left the factory like this can be identified by the absence of a drain plug on the swivel housing; those retro-greased cannot). If the swivel is grease-filled, it shouldn't leak oil even if the seals are bad.
If yours is grease filled and is leaking oil, the most likely reason is that the oil seals at the outboard end of the axle-tube (ie inboard of the swivel housing) are leaking and allowing axle oil to migrate into the swivel housing (check the diff for oil loss). These are a bit of a pain to replace, but no more so that the swivel housing seals; to replace either the swivel housing has to be removed from the axletube. |

my swivel seals were changed under warranty at my first service in january - i didn't know that there was a problem.
i have now got a definate leaking nearside swivel seal which the dealer is rectifying in 2 weeks time! is this a common problem with pumas? |

It's a common problem with Land Rovers of all ages! Steve.

Hi,
It is a 2009 MY 110, with about 34K miles on the clock. About a year ago I had a seal replaced on the right rear wheel hub, I had a leak however it manifested itself on the front of the wheel. The current leak shows as two dribble/weeping trails on the inside of the wheels... |

I have had to have the swivel housing replaced. Initially we thought it was just a seal, but after investigation and a bit of wobble in the wheel when I went over a bump,, turned out to be the swivel housing with lots of play in the king pins. Current:D4 HSE

later ones are grease, as yours will be. the hot weather is showing up weakness in the seals i would of thought. take some pcitures of the leaks and get them to replace the seals under warranty.

Thanks for the helpful responses guys.
Sadly the warranty expired last month. I'm guessing it should be good for our trip this weekend to Normandy, and I'll sort it with the local garage when I get back. That reminds me... I'll have to do some searching and/or post a thread asking if anyone knows decent places in/around High Wycombe (as well as to update me profile since we moved from Oxfordshire). I'll go to a garage as swapping the seals looks to be beyond my basic mechanical skill. Not that I wouldn't mind having a bash, but I don't even think I've got all the tools.... plus they'd probably all roll down hill on this silly driveway. |

yep outer seal has gone. wouldn't be a problem for your trip i wouldn't of thought. you can always top them up with EP90 or more grease.
easiest way to change the seal for a quick fix is do it all insitu just cut the new seal prior to fitting to get it around the axle and then put the cut section at the top. 30mins longer was - just remove caliper, undo the 7(?) bolts holding the whole wheel station onto the axle, remove wheel station with shaft still attached. place on bench and remove metal seal guard, then seal, then replace all. an hour or 90mins even longer way - go on the from the outside edge and remove hub etc etc. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

I've seen a lot worse than that, if I were you I'd clean them off [bit of degreaser and gently wash away and keep an eye on them, it only takes a little bit of semi fluid grease / ep90 to make a lot of mess. Steve.

About 2 weeks ago I wiped the dribbling oil and I've not seen any real return yet. Perhaps there is none left to leak out |
