Glyn - looks to be an excellent idea, so long as the legals are ok, you could sell them anywhere (except Norway).
Defender door locks are about as secure as those doors so no loss of security Lets see some prototypes ! |

Glyn,
Personally I think it's not such a good idea. You've got an XS with aircon, it can be dusty where you are and also with the apparent 'lack of crime' you're still putting temptation in some toe rag's way be it a Brit or otherwise. Besides if you've been gorging at Chris' Kebabs and on Brandy Sours I wager you could do with losing a bit of beef.... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

If you were to engineer hinges in a lift out style like a series one would that fall foul of the construction and use regs and or mot? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Series doors wouldn't be much of an advantage over just winding the window down, door tops are usually taken off if you have your roof off or windscreen down. How about those mesh doors they use in stock car racing Look like plastic mesh!
I like the one's in your picture though |

As far as the legal implications go I wouldnt know, but I would hazard a guess is its just another form of customisation so as long as your insurance company were happy.....
I remember the days when delivery drivers used to drive around with their sliding doors open in the summer, and paradoxically, the General Lee had its doors welded closed 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top Beer 'n Sex 'n Chips 'n Gravy |

I don't see the point of fabricating doors like in the picture, when Series doors do virtually the same thing and are cheap! 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

OK, some valid points:
I would ideally like to just remove the doors- this way it will cost me nothing at all and will take me about 60mins to do all the work. BUT..... If I have to have a form of 'door' I would rather make my own.... 1. I do have AC which is nice on long motorway journeys but from one end of the island to the other is about 2 hours and I live in the middle so normally on the motorway for a max of 1 hour. 50-60% of the driving I do is off-road so constantly have my windows down and looking out. For this reason the dust still gets in without any problems.... not that the door-seals keep it out anyhow!! 2. Series doors- I thought about this, but as mentioned above there would be marginal difference to just having the windows open..... Plus the surface is big and flat so would need a good paint-job which would cost approx £300-500 alone. So if I were to get series door frames (with the catch)... about £50 each new, and then cut all the flimsy parts off and replace them with steel tube (same diameter as the cage) I will then be able to spray it up myself as slight blemishes wouldn't be noticeable. I also would be using the current hinges so there won't be any modification there.... Cost would be about £100 a door inc frame, tubes and paint (all work by myself). Currently 50% of the time I leave my Defender open with the windows down, and about 30% of that I leave the keys in the ignition. The island is so small (LR club has about 50 members and the largest off road club has about 200 members), if anyone was to even try and sell a wheel/ tyre etc it would be flagged up in a second. I haven't heard of a single car being stolen on the island in the past 10 months compared to about 10 Land Rover every month in the UK..... But cars have items stole out of them on a daily basis (ipods, sat-nav etc). I might just approach the rozzers here and see what they say. Glyn |

I hope the police say go for it - I can't wait to see it with tubular doors! (front and rear?). A bikini hood too would look excellent! Peter

I don't think there's any issues with taking the doors off.
the issues are with the doors. ie if you have doors they need to meet certain criteria ie latch position plus secured - but not sure what else. |
