Defender standard suspension
In a bid to get an answer to the question - what is wrong with factory fit Defender suspension I would lile ask members.

Very much depends on how you use your truck.

My 90 is an "off road scratchy", standard AT tyres, standard height springs, no a/r bars and I've not got stuck in some pretty nasty conditions. A/R bars would improve road manners but it's no sports car.

I've not tried lifting (I have enough of a challenge getting the standard height truck in the garage) not upgrading the struts so I don't know if it's "improved".

Depends on what you are doing with it?

Standard suspension is a compromise, as most standard items are.

Mine (110 USW) is great when loaded.

But when unladen, the rear end is a bit too bouncy (on road) for me - I'm investigating swapping the rear springs for something less harsh. A job for this weekend.

I hardly ever load the vehicle up to max...if I have a big or heavy load I prefer to use the trailer because it's easier to load and unload than using the rear door. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

if you find the ride a bit harsh you can always experiment with tyre pressures.
The recommended rear pressures for my 110 are 48psi but I have them at 43 as I want to keep my fillings !

Ok vague question I know, just wanted to see if others thought the standard springs and oil filled shocks are as said a compromise on cost. Just fishing really to see what others think. Bearing in mind it would not cost much to Galv the chassis for instance and I wonder if they test the vehciles with the same suspension they are sold with.

Standard is fine and cheap to replace if broken.

Changing suspension is a minefield and many people having played/ spent a lot of money/ have reverted back to standard, particularly if they have raised the height.

Unless you feel you have greater engineering expertise than Land Rover - leave alone!!

Fair point well made but owning a Defender you might sometimes think my Dad's cat has more engineering expertise than Land Rover lol

C 2015 110 USW XS in Santorini with premium contrast leather seats in tan/black, black headlining and with Dual Finish alloys (in the garage, now on Wolf rims with Goodyear MT/Rs)

2012 '62' 2.2 X-Tech 110 USW now gone ...
1984 90 soft top with full roll cage, 200 tdi engine etc now sold

Nothing wrong with the standard set up at all. Landrover spent Łks developing the best all round set up.

It won't have the bright colour or fancy logo of some of the aftermarket kit but does the job well. You only need to fit something else if you want to 'tune' the set up for a particular application. John
