England 2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Keswick Green
Steering relay
As above, fitted to front drivers side corner of chassis.

Mine appears to be leaking from the bottom of the front face. Anyone know if it can have seals replaced or is it a complete new un'.

Any idea of cost?

Cheers all.

It's actually the steering box, steering relays disappeared in 1983.

Depends where it is leaking, if it is the main output shaft seal that is replaceable, other seals are more specialist replaceable. Richard

Either a 90, 110 or 130.

O.k. Tar for the info'.

If you look at from the front of the vehicle it's the lower front circular recessed face it seems to be leaking from.

It is entirely feasible to rebuild an Adwest steering box yourself (provided that you are competent and have adequate tools and facilities) but the difficulty is getting the internal parts you need, which is nearly impossible.

Unless it is a very simple repair you are probably better off with an exchange unit.

I have had extremely bad experiences with Landrover Genuine Parts steering boxes in the past; the original one on my Disco2 started to leak at about 130k miles, so I replaced it with a Genuine Part, which failed within six weeks with a leak far more sever than the first). The second replacement (again genuine) lasted just long enough for the warraanty to expire (literally one week after the anniversary of the original replacement and whilst less that a year old) and failed, again worse than the original. In my subsequent discussions with the main dealer (very helpful but with hands tied) and Landrover, it became apparent that ALL Disco2 boxes supplied by LR are reconditions; it is simply not possible to opt for a new one (you don't get the choice, and you pay the full price). It seems that the reconditioning is carried out by Johny Hillbilly on the cheap, and they do not get rebuilt to Adwest standards. I appreciate that I may have been unlucky and the situation may have been improved, but i would now only buy from LR if there was no other choice (first choice Adwest in Reading, since at least it is rebuilt to OE specs).

In the end I bought a second-hand box off Ebay that came off a Disco a year older but much lower mileage and which had never been rebuilt. 60k miles on it is still going strong. I did also rebuild the last leaky one myself, properly this time, but have not yet needed to refit it. The standard of rebuild assembly was apalling, with seals fitted crooked and a number of other completely avoidable defects.

The steering box seal where the drop arm ball joint connects was leaking on my 110. I replaced seal and now leak free Thumbs Up kit cost £6.99
