I'm visiting my parents in the UK and their gas hob (about 10 years old and barely used) doesn't cut out automatically, i.e. you can turn the gas on and leave it on even when it's not lit. Is this normal or is it malfunctioning?

Mines the same [5 years old]
I'm not aware of any gas hobs that automatically cut the gas off if you dont ignite it? Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Matt, if you are concerned may I suggest you get a qualified gas plumber to check out all the gas installation. The old CORGI now Gas Safe check.
Tenanted properties need an annual gas safety check whereas owner occupiers do not. Brendan |

Cheers Brendan
I'm guessing it was a cheap hob in the first place (installed by the builder and some no-name brand). Here in Ze-Land all the hobs sold for the last 10-15 years have a thermocouple that cuts the gas when there's no flame. I'm going to suggest my parents get a new hob (at least the oven is electric) as they're getting "that bit older" now and have left the gas on more than once - also my father has no sense of smell! Thanks again guys for the advice Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
