I always rate Garmin for the simple fact that they have been in the game the longest and the Services use Garmin products. My car sat nav is a Garmin for the same reasoning. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

On 'my' boat we use Navtex, Sperry Marine and Transas systems in conjunction with each other. If you got a spare few hundred thousand pounds I'll give you the specifications.

Zag - I have that exact Etrex GPS but not for marine use........ Geocaching for us It's a cracking bit of kit, robust, accurate (uses both GPS & GLONASS satellites) and is perfect for what we use it for..... however..... Not sure it would be much use for your considered application though as the downside is its very limited mapping (basic world map included with no apparent ability to download more detailed maps/marine charts). Fine for me rummaging through the undergrowth for tupperware boxes but perhaps not for you for navigating the solent. Deffo give the Garmin brand a thumbs up too though..... Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Hi Jon, as you say it only gives co-ordinates so has to be used in conjunction with a chart. You can however mark your waypoints, this can also be done by marking them on your outward journey. The chances of needing it are slim as I always tend to keep land in sight and keep an eye on my bearings, it's just when an unexpected mist comes down as it did the other week and you lose your bearings a bit. Compass work takes too long, a GPS with pre-recorded waypoints would be so much easier Once your close in, channels are always marked with buoys to get you in safely or that's the hope - the East Coast extensive mudflats are nasty to navigate - OK now that i have a low draught boat with bilge keels - used to be terrified with my long keel boat, not fun!
I don't want to spend much and they do come up on e-bay for £20 which will do the job for now. WHAT IS GEOCACHING? |

Understand where you coming from now Zag. As you can tell, I'm not a mariner
Think "Treasure hunt meets Crystal Maze using GPS" Great fun with (or without ) the younger kids and a super way to get them out and about and exploring. Better explanation here We only really started in earnest a couple of months back......Slowly getting better at it.. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Ah, orienteering with treats at the end
When they are old enough take them to Snowdonia and do a few mountains, can't be beaten for an experience. Some great ascents that will frighten the life out of them looking from below but as you climb you can see it is quite manageable and will be quite an achievement for them - usual safety precautions apply. The week before I went up one climb an 8 year old boy died on a Scout outing - got lost in the mist |
