Puma engine destroyed at 30.000km
A member of our local forum own a my08 puma with 30.000km. Last sunday while driving on the highway he heard a heavy noise coming from engine. He almost immediatly turned off the engine and parked the car.

His car was then towed to local assistance and after removing the oil sump, debris of bearing was found (probably coming from the cranckshaft or connecting rod area).

His car was always well serviced and oil level check after failure was ok. He never heard any strange knocking on start related to the problem Symptom 497000.

I wonder how this kind of failure can happen and what's your thought about this. Anyone experienced the same problem here ?

It happens, (was going to put an 'sh' before the It) and invariably it gets more publicity than reliability and excellent performance does. There could be a myriad of reasons why it happened and we could theorise until Doomsday what went wrong. I doubt the reasoning behind the failure will be found until the repair/strip down is commenced. If the failure is catastrophic and there is a lot of damage the reason may never be discovered.

Probably a freak incident as K9 intimates it can and does happen to any make of engine. I always think it's amazing how long engines go on for when you think of how they are made, the tolerances involved, and what they are put through...

100% with K9F

First it is necessary to see the engine. Like just wrote in Africaland the best second step is to do an oil chemical analysis.....

Think on "how many Transit run with more than 200000 - 250000 km..... a lot...... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

If it's not under warranty and he thinks it may be a manufacturing process flaw, it may be worth him paying out for an oil chemical/spectroanalysis check himself perhaps, if he intends to challenge the issue? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

As said before you need to get the engine inspected and oil analysed, however this may not even find the root cause.

Don't forget to get the injectors checked, a faulty injector may give dangerously high cylinder pressures causing premature engine failure.

Good pictures K9F, no heat on any components is a good indicator of a component failure. How big are those components? I have some parts in my loft I will get them down and post some pictures and the cause too.

Welcome! V20 Rushton engine giving appropximately 10,000BHP at 1100 RPM.....Awesome figures but at idle sound absolutely terrible, especially with two engines on each side.....bit like a Defender I suppose. Jeez....I suppose you only hear of the horror stories. I trash my 90 up and down motorways daily.

That's a major money rebuild or worse for a new engine unless Landrover are going to foot the bill. Current...07 90 Puma commercial

Heres a nice engine, weighs in a 76t and the alternator is 42t where fitted.

"Spectral exam:
In the spectral exam, we take a portion of your oil sample and run it through a machine called a spectrometer. The spectrometer analyzes the oil and tells us the levels of the various metals and additives that are present in the oil. This gives us a gauge of how much your engine is wearing. To learn more about the elements we look at and where they come from in your oil, go to our Report Explanation page.

Insolubles test:
The insolubles test measures the amount of abrasive solids that are present in the oil. The solids are formed by oil oxidation (when the oil breaks down due to the presence of oxygen, accelerated by heat) and blow-by past the rings. This test tells you how good a job the oil filter is doing, and to what extent the oil has oxidized.

Viscosity test:
The viscosity measures the grade, or thickness, of the oil. Whether it's supposed to be a 5W/30, 15W/40, or some other grade, we will know (within a range) what the viscosity should be. If your viscosity falls outside that range, there's probably a reason: the oil could have been overheated or contaminated with fuel, moisture, or coolant.

Flash Point test:
The Flash Point test measures the temperature at which vapors from the oil ignite. For any specific grade of oil, we know what temperature the oil should flash at. If it flashes at or above that level, the oil is not contaminated. If the oil flashes off lower than it should, then it's probably been contaminated with something. Fuel is the most common contaminant in oil."
