Mud tyres
Want to get a cheap set of mud tyres after my recent trip to salisbury plain, and being beaten by an old boy in a slightly battered series 2 on a hill. Can anyone recommend something?

Loads out there, BFG M/T (KM or KM2), Cooper STT, Goodyear Wranglers to mention a few of the more popular ones. Mud terrain tires are probably the single most effective way of improving a vehicle's capability.

Also, how much off-road do you do, a set of BFG A/T or Cooper ST would make a huge difference over stock too.

A better thread would be to find a few sets that are within your budget and then ask for reviews on them. Everyone will have a favourite (mine are BFG).

If it's for occasional use, then some remoulds maybe?

However i've heard very good things about the 235/85/16 Maxxis MT754 Buckshot Mudder

A few people I know who do 4x4 driving professionally, and thus rely on decent tyres, say these are very good, good VFM, and wear well.

Cheap does not equal good

Old boy in Series 2? OK trading on thin ice here. Was that old boy just an experienced driver who knew his vehicle, had correct tyre pressure and how to tackle that hill with no wheel spin etc??

Good tyres help so does experience!

What use do you put your land rover too?

Reason why I ask is those round, black rubber things are the things which keep your vehicle in touch with the ground and are an essential safety feature.

Personally I would not risk my life on cheap tyres.

We run our Defenders on BFG M/T (2 x 110) and the 90 on BFG A/T. BFG M/T are good off road and on road. They are not cheap however you are talking about a tyre that will do 60,000 miles+

Get taller & narrower tyres. That old boy might have had 750 x 16 which would be good on a Series 2. Series (was it petrol?) are much lighter than modern Defenders so he may have had more advantage than was immediately visible.

For a cheap 2nd set of tyres you could go with Insa Turbo - various available and the Special Track will take you just about anywhere, for about £80 each. 1970 Series 2A 88"

Cooper stt's are very good in my opinion, had some on my last landy as a full time set and they were about 500 quid for 4

All true, but the new style BFG MT has very soft rubber and does not have the longevity of the more classic BFG MT tread pattern, in fact I went through a set of the new BFG MT tyres in just over 20k miles on my TD5 110 CSW... But they were BRILLIANT offroad, just on the black stuff they wore down super quick.

To be honest this is only my experience so take it how you will. I have now moved away from MTs and am running with the Conti Cross-Contact ATs and love them to bits, great on and off road, they wear really well and touch wood I have yet to get stuck with them on the 110... In fact I have been winch-less for nearly 18 months now and do not feel at all concerned, they just keep on going...

Brings about another question... Are tyres becoming too aggressive?? Are this sort of tyre making off roading too easy? Whistle

lol - you do see what you've done there...get better tyres, and then next time he beats you look at the engine and ask here the best way to get more power...and it goes on Rolling with laughter

Seriously, good agressive tyres will make a difference.

Insa Turbo's. lots of people run these for off road use. They are really bad on road though!

Something a little more 80/20 off/on road would be Cooper STT or BFG MT.

Until recently I have used BFG AT 235's on my old 90 and never got stuck on the Salisbury plains, These are great on and off road. I changed my 90 for a 110 now have Goodyear MTRs, again 235's, these have a bit more road noise but again great on the plains

Given your location, well worth a trip to micheldever tyres

i've already got bfg a/t, but found that they just weren't aggressive enough and promtly were looking like slicks. The old boy wasn't driving it gently.
I was looking at a set of mud terrain for a second set for occasional use. I realise like most things in life cheap don't mean good, though I have seen plenty of people using insa turbo's although they do look a bit too aggressive. I was probably looking at getting a set of second hand wheel+tyre combo?

Run these myself on the farm and they're great tyres. Not sure if you're saying that they're remoulds or not Jim, but just to clarify they are not.. Wink Thumbs Up 04' 90 Td5 CSW..
