If you don't want to drill, try one of these, though I'd ask if it will suit a later wheel carrier, I'm not sure if it does?

ditch cb and get decent radios
![]() Seriously - I use amateur but I know that's not everyones choice. PMR is also a good choice a few options that I have used in the past. 1 get the midland 42 hand held - a fantastic radio for close chat - i.e. in a convoy no need for external antenna similar to what was said with magnets - I cut a small steel plate and glued this to the inside of the roof - was easy to get under the roof lining - and just used a load of grab adhesive. - used a 4" square plate - cut from an old steel shelf - was only about a couple of mil thick. - cheap easy fix It allows you to use a mag mount Another one that I personally didn't use but one of the other guys did - was to have a single roof bar - think it was a thule ole and mounted the antenna to that - Hope this helps Defender 110 County SW Disco 3 HSE Freelander 2 HSE - SOLD going back to a car www.lothian4x4response.org |

It was picking up alot of interference from the 110 itself. Weird as it made the wipers move! could hear you sometimes and not others. Would like on like that for laning etc....

When I had my PUMA I ran an extra earth cable from the base of the ant to a suitable earth point just inside the rear door. That way it kept the earth cable as short as possible, the ant was mounted just above the back door BTW 110 D250 SE HT

![]() Amateur - formally licensed - and yes you need all others to be the same to use - but on numerous occasions this has been the best compared to CB and / PMR - For PMR - I was referring to using PMR446 - but decent kit not the cheap 2 way walks you get in some places. professional PMR units like Entel HT446 - works great - I found the midland great when I used it - I found it better with the 12v power pack and the sep antenna rather than the rubber duck one that was with it - Defender 110 County SW Disco 3 HSE Freelander 2 HSE - SOLD going back to a car www.lothian4x4response.org |

That sounds like an earth fault on the vehicle rather than a failing of the radio. I've also got a Midland 42 and find it to be excellent. I have a Midland 42 handheld wired in to the 90 as and when needed in much the same way as a moble unit would be, with a plug in mic'/speaker too.
With the rubber duck aerial it was fine for around 1/2 a mile or so, but I fitted an external aerial which can now get out and receive at least 5 miles. I went for the 42 as I could use it on batteries in my Series II with the rubber duck and not having to worry about the positive earth. As there's no roof on her I expect the signal to go well past the 1/2 mile as mentioned above inside the 90 with the rubber duck aerial. A word about handheld PMR. Firstly, even the cheap handset pairs from places such as Aldi work well and well past their advertised 300m range, as mine did when we tested them, however, mindfull of the law concerning the use of mobiles without hands free, I asked a police officer mate of mine regarding the use of handheld pmr's and he said it was a no no in the same vane as a mobile. Not strictly true.... it is not illegal to use radios/cbs when driving. The legislators were very careful to make it just phones and simialr GSM products. For some reason Airwave sets (Plod radio) are not included in the ban either. The radio user will still come under the old 'not in proper control' as the phone users did up in unilt December '03, but there is a burden of proof that hey were in someway unable to control the vehicle... I use an Icom IC-F4029SDR PMR radio, that has a removeable mic attached, and have driven past loads of plod while using it.. Had a few looks, but not been pulled.. Unlike my number plates, but that's another story! Yaesu FT-817DN being installed in the cubby this weekend.. 1.8Mhz to 430Mhz!! ![]() .. I [__][_]|__ .. I __ |"_|"__| ..
