Winch Front-Back DIY/bought, advise opinions?
Hi,

Would like to hear your opinions before deciding which way to go.

Have a Husky ex camel lying around which I want to mount on the 110.

Cant leave the idea of building a front or rear bumper myself.

As we will be travelling a lot on our own I see the benefits of putting the winch on the back, inside the car is no option.
Tow bar is installed so ground anchor arguments are no point here.
No competition or event use.

Front mount being classic look but might also level the car better once it is loaded with all the stuff and the RTT on the back. At the other hand it might be just the weight necessary to smoothen out the springy ride of an empty 110 all the rest of the time. (and the back suspension is made to take more weight anyway)

So, whether I decide front or back is still an open question. Related to that I have the possibility to fabricate the front or back bumper myself, for about 1/3rd of commercial versions with the benefit that I can adapt and tweak to my taste.

And there I have the feeling a front DIY bumper is a legal no-go ?
But how many aftermarket bumpers are really certified? What is the legal difference with a “homemade” version? (go from the point that the design will be over-engineered and fabricated at industrial level)

Anybody aware of EU legislation? I don’t want to modify the car (eg replacement rear crossmember) , its bolt-on designs only.

I do know that for roof-racks there is no need for certification, you as an owner should attach everything to you car in such a way it does not endanger anybody. But these are impact zones so I wonder if the same rule applies.

I am absolutely not in a hurry with this but I cant find a bumper that I really like that takes a husky, let alone one that fits an aircon vehicle.

All your thoughts appreciated! Bow down

Smile

PS: I have no commercial intentions with this, just cant find my taste and have the workshop available. Nothing against buying, its just longer fun building it.
