Ahem, where were we? Oh yeah, I did the same, did that, waisted money! Buy a nice head unit, and fit some bigger speakers somehwere, if you can, squeeze an amp and sub in somewhere |

Could be a dodgy lead or connection between the ipod and the head unit, or could be a dodgy ipod. I repaired an ipod for someone over Christmas with a similar fault. There was a broken joint on the tiny board which the headphone socket is mounted to. You could make it work sometimes by wiggling the lead.

Check the balance (left and right) to see that nothing has been changed, I've done it too many time where I jump to the conclusion that it's broken, when in fact it's just that the settings are wrong. Also take out and plug back in the audio aux lead, when it isn't in properly or doesn't have it the whole way in then it can just play out into one side of speakers.
Is a pity it hasn't turned out well for you, I changed all mine to alpine 10cm's and apart from an overlap in the plastic edging to the standard speaker cover it fits fine and works beautifully, only issue I had was the rear lighting loom part got in the way of the left rear speaker on my 90 so had to fasten it up with cable ties. I do find that the standard Stereo is not the most reliable, I changed mine after it refused to give me back my CD displaying an error code so ripped the out and put in a Bluetooth Sony one which is much better. As the others have said
Start with the Head Unit with a Decent Amp unless you want to have an exteral Amp if so buy a corsa My Route was Change front speakers to Focal High & Mids HU is a Kenwood Media player no CD so the units is not as deep more room behind for wires I have a 110 so I made some rear boxes and installed 6*9 oval Focal Mid & Low Installed an Active Sub (Focal) proper size not an under the seat job I will in time up the speaker wires but the sound puts most of the Gary boys to Shame |

I have the same issue when I plug my CB into the aux channel; the problem is it's a mono plug, double check the plug and lead.

Are you certain the polarity of the speakers was right? That might account for the rubbish tinny quality. Easy mistake. 2016 D4 HSE

I too upgraded the head unit with an Alpine, put in a sub and stayed with the original speakers. Once done I found the original speakers sounded ok and could handle a reasonable amount of volume once you'd taken the bass away from them.

thanks everyone
RRUK I thought at first it might be the polarity as the LR speakers are not marked but usually the narrower of the two connectors is the negative one so I followed that arrangement Looks like I might have to spend some cash on a head unit then. Thanks for the suggestions all |

You can very easily check the positive and negative using a multimeter Voltage setting That's what I did with mine anyway:

I've got a multimeter somewhere but I wouldn't have a clue as to how to check which terminals are + or -. How exactly do you do that konabikes if thats not too dim a question ?

If its a digital multimeter, put the red and black leads from the meter into the speaker connections, dosent matter which one or which way around, just put one lead in one connection and one lead in the other.
Put meter on DC volts (if scaled under 50V should be fine) If you get -4.4V (for instance) your the wrong way around - i.e. your black wire is + and your red wire is - or vice a versa. If your meter is analogue, and its the wrong way around, the needle will try to go the otherway, reverse the leads and your there. |

As Paul above said. Quite simply I would have thought negative - would give no reading at all. positive + should. And also make sure radio is on and playing something
