2005 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Tonga Green
UK Diesel vs Australian Diesel
I have recently imported a 2005 Defender 90 Td5 XS into Australia. I am still only on my first tank of diesel after the vehicle sat in the container for 3 months.

When acclerating at high rpm more then normal puffs of smoke. Normal driving it does not do it. Just when i give it a thrashing i see a nice long smoke trail.

I can't remember it behaving like this a few months ago while in the UK. Today i filled up with BP Ultimate Diesel which i hope might improve it.

The vehicle is "Chipped" by ADM Ltd Northants (Alastair Milne) It was done in 2008 and has been great. Could a UK chipped vehicle act differently on Australian Fuel? Or is Australian Diesel poorer quality and this is normal?

As it is remapped it may have something to do with over fuelling, is it black smoke under heavy acceleration?

Aussie Diesel is better than Pomgolian Diesel !
Actually I beleive cetane values are comparable. I run one of Gary Wood's remaps Thumbs Up ( Alive Tuning. ) no worries at all. Aussie diesel is now low sulphur like the UK. There are many chip's, however it should not blow smoke, maybe over fuelling . All I would suggest that you use one of the Bespoke tuners Bas / Alive.

Yes under very very heavy acceleration. But it never did this in the UK i would have noticed im sure.

I suppose with a different climate things could have changed...

Check you air filter, it could also be a failed MAF sensor. Those are they only causes of smoke for me now I have an Alive remap.

I will check the air filter tomorrow. I know it had a new MAF sensor late 2009 but i suppose they can go again. I am the second owner of the vehicle. The first owner had this chip done in 2007. Here is what i got with the vehicle.

Could the orgional engine management settings from factory be on this? As i was not aware the Newer type flashable ECUs had a slot or anything inside?

It's funny this is actually happening now im out in australia. I was thinking of taking the vehicle to Alive tuning as i was working up north for a period to have this remap that was done in 2007 checked out. I just never got around to it and things just started to get too busy.

An 05MY Defender will be flash mapped. No need to hard wire something in.

Probably worth getting some sort of LR diagnostics done, just to check over the vehicle and make sure it isn't something silly like air flow meter or an injector.
