2.4 vs 2.2
I've a 90XS 2.4 and today drove the new 2.2 both on road and offroad at the LRE Luton Hoo.

First off from cold, its much quieter to fire up, less clatter , and also smoother. Idling away its significantly quieter and smoother too and I'd also be tempted to use the word 'refined' in comparison.

Driving off and the whole noise/vibration/harshness is better than the 2.4. It spins up easier too ( only had 350 miles on the clock) , and the pull from lower rpm is better. This was a 110 and so I expected it to feel tardier than mine, but it didn't.

In fact if you score the 2.4 as a 5/10 this is a 7.5/10.

Offroad it did all the daft things that these vehicles can do with ease.

Really only the DPF issue hangs over this engine as a black spot, and although I could try and post rationalise that this would put me off it......but I can't (for what I use the vehicle for I hasten to add).

So out of the box comparison , no mods, and its a better lump/installation. Arse... unless you're getting one, in which case...Bastid Smile

Job 1 in the New Year , soundproofing and a lead blanket for mine!

interesting, doing a similar comparison at LRE against my own 2.4 i thought there was no noticeable difference. Cheers

This will be the same as Td5 vs TDCi, will go on forever, will get heated, will be pointless.

They are slightly different, some plus points to the older unit, some for the newer one.

Lets keep calm, enjoy what we have and NOT try and score points over others. We all love Defenders (well mostly!). Just enjoy it/them. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

No idea what drama the switch to tdci from the td5 caused, however the differences (to me) were more than expected. Still thats the natural progression and development of these things, hopefully no one will throw a teddy.

Defender's previous post is 'bang on!' It reminded me of a previous quote of mine which is also true in this case.....

We will undoubtedly bleat as loud and be just as critical and vociferous when the new one is launched as TD5 owners were on the launch of the Puma and TDI owners before that and .........! Thumbs Up

I am sure the 2.2 will undoubtedly prove it's worth after all it's had 6 decades of development.... Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I have been on 2 LRE full days using a 2.4 (110) Defender. Both times their different vehicles were quieter than my 90.

LRE vehicles are LR serviced & highly maintained at Solihull I was told by an instructor, as they are demonstration vehicles, they always seem as new smooth quiet compared to privately owned ones. Don't be too harsh on your vehicle! Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender
