It is a bit hard to get your head round at first, but ultimatly its about or is called social networking. Depending on how you wish to use the "tools"on the social networking site will also depend on what personal reward you will get.

Here is a video that may make it a little better to understand, http://www.commoncraft.com/video/social-networking

I personally use Twitter, Forums, etc etc for business as "tools" to help my business, Personal users may use these for knowlage on how to fix a landrover for free from people like me who share info where possibile as im sociable and im not a social type site or where to buy the best rock sliders as examples. They may also use them just to socialise with others and ask questions and get answers from non related or already known friends just like this thread really. You ask your question and because this is a social networking type site its an ideal place to ask questions to like minded people.

The social sites available can work in dirrerent many ways for all people depending on how the "tools" are used.

As another example someone write on Twitter a new paper called Solihull Times, as part of its content some of mt Tweets were added with my product in, http://paper.li/fredblondieau/1319190917/~list Interestingly one link I posted went to the D3 forum Very Happy , but more to the point the news paper was writen with some of my content in, by someone who I dont know and was read by 90 ish people today already that I have never met or spoken to or know of. So for me as a business the Twitter "Tool" has now possibily showed my product as a business to 90 new people. It can or could work in many different ways as said for anyone if they choose to use it.

Its very hard to explain but I hope it give some sort of an idea why and how etc.

Pete

facebook and twitter is about 2 big firms using your Intellectual Property to make a fookload of cash.

Like facebook it's 99% inane drivel and to be avoided.

Twitter is an ideal medium for a business to get up to date information to interested parties only The other way is to 'spam' with mass emails to people who might be interested, but mass emailing is becoming a real PITA.

If people want to know more about your business, then encourage them to 'follow' you on Twitbook etc.

On a personal level, I am less convinced that other folk are really interested in what I had for breakfast, unless I am very famous, then they will be really interested in what I want them to know!

Its a powerful tool to some, a waste of electrons to others. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

GarethR, I agree with you those that give out the breakfast content etc aremad and to me its a total waste of time and typing and who wants to know if we or they have had two eggs or toast today anyway. And those who type "in the pub" may as well type burglers come and empty my house as imout in the pub Smile

I agree Pom FB is full of drizzle generally lol.

When I was searching for work I used LinkedIn. Similar to FB but business orientated. There are lots of user groups of like minded people. A very good tool for networking. Never looked at Twitter, it doesn't interest me. I do several forums and FB but that's about it 110 D250 SE HT

They should call them 'Twits' not 'Twitterers'.

Troble with LInkedIn is that when you meet someone it's not the first thing that springs to mind. I normaly do a bit of research after meeting someone if they interest me. Do a google search which often throws up their LI profile. But I don't like sending connections to people who I haven't spoken to or met. I have had a glut of people wanting to connect but who I have had no connection with or no shared groups. Trouble is my career path is a tad specialised and the network connections are hard to get. It's normally done by reputation and word of mouth. Which isn't such a bad thing 110 D250 SE HT
