Suppliers in threads
Am I the only one who has become a little disillusioned with some of the input from suppliers and site sponsors on Defender2?

There is no doubt that some experts in their field have been huge contributors to threads and the shared knowledge of the forum users. You know who you are and your input is always relevant to the OP.

I get the impression that some suppliers are using the forum as their shop front and this is starting to make me a little uncomfortable.

I am thrilled when a suppliers comes to the site offering a discount to the users, or proposes a group buy or a new product, again you know who you are and I thank you.

Martin, I know it must be difficult moderating these threads, I think generally the balance is usually there.

All I am asking of you suppliers is to try and get the balance right, please don't take us for granted.
There are lots of suppliers out there who can provide the parts we need, please try to add value to the thread, add market insight, promote different manufacturers and by all means offer the lowest price.

Rant over !

Sorry can’t see the problem it’s no different from reading a magazine the Ad’s are there in your face
The Site sponsors pay to be here so why not tout their wares? If the don’t sell they don’t survive
I can hardly say Id buy on a whim but the input aids research. A thread is no different to a phone call don’t read it same as you can just hang up.
Some forums have a ignore user function I use it to ignore irrelevant posts from a chap who IMO is a to$$er make the thread comical at times I don’t think Martins forum thou can support this
It’s been said though some sponsors can kill a forum however without the monitory input the forum might not survive Rock & Hard place

I have to say I have always found that the help and advice given by some of the 'trade' users on here to be very beneficial, and I commend them for that. I suppose the forum can also help serve as a platform for them to also develop products with our input too. Thanks chaps Thumbs Up 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top

MMM, I would love to think that this was not aimed at me...I was first a member on here, before I even worked at S4x4, then I (we) became a site sponsor when I started here.
It's sometimes difficult to post on some threads as it's easy to take a bit of 'advice' being wrong, then it sends a shadow of doom over the business.

Am I feeling guilty? Neutral Embarassed Confused Cool

looking forward to your comments Thumbs Up

i am happy with the level of input from the sponsors; and when they join in on various threads i am far more likely to get a quote from them in the first instance rather than a random google search; as i feel that they are genuinely interested in the same things as me.

Sticky - I fully understand your point, and think that the sponsors should try to get involved in the discussions if at all possible.

I have had a change of job role, hence adding 'Steve @ Lookers Park Royal', as I am not able to view as many of the posts as I used to, baring in mind we sponsor all six of Martin's forums Whistle . Steve and I tend to click on 'New Posts' a few times a day to check if there is anything we can assist with. We also have the other department managers email addresses in our signatures with a hyperlink to their email address.

That said, we receive quite a few PM's and direct emails asking for assistance with various requests which is obviously behind the scenes and not published in the threads.

The sponsors do pay a monthly subscription, therefore it should be expected that there will be a commercial element to their involvement…… it’s just getting the balance right I suppose.

Hopefully Lookers Park Royal have the right balance.

James Thumbs Up

PS. As a Defender owner myself, I do take a keen interest in the Defender forum.

Dear all,

Thanks for your comments about this, an interesting read so far Smile

Broadly speaking, the site sponsors are enthusiasts too, and get involved in threads where they are not selling - this is very different from many other forums where sponsors either can't or don't also contribute to forum "life" in additional to supporting it with their sponsorship.

I am making some tweaks to the forum structure to help separate commercial promotion threads out from the forum discussions, which I hope will address the original concerns.
