When it really snows the snow also does not melt on my standard SVX H4 units. These halogens get warmer, but not warm enough to keep them snow free. Also have to get out from time to time to wipe them clear. Think only cars with headlamp washers can really remove snow. This is not so bad as the side mirrors constantly freezing up when it is cold and a bit humid, much more annoying.

maybe a coating of rainX or polished meths would make the lens more slippery ?

are they glass or plastic / polycarbon lenses ?

I've been looking at getting LED headlights, but is it true that from 2012 vehicles fitted with HID or LED headlights will need self leveling lamps/suspension & washers for the MOT?

Lots of questions to answer, so here we go...

The headlights are fully ECE approved for all functions, high & low beam, and front position light (sidelight).

The headlights are available as LHD (EU) or RHD (UK) specifications. Headlamp deflectors could be used when using UK spec lamps in Europe, but since the beam pattern is so clean and focused, chances are they won't dazzle anyway.

Snow clearing – the JWS LED headlights will clear snow and ice. I think down to minus 20 deg c from memory.

These lamps have a poly-carbonate lens, and are shallow in depth, so they will fit most motorcycles too.

2012 MOT & LED: Washing & levelling is not required for JWS LED headlights fitted to Defender as the luminous flux is below the threshold where this is mandatory.

There is no legal HID conversion / kit in existence for the Defender irrespective of levelling or washing being fitted or not.

HID reading in it’s most simplified form: http://www2.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps.html

Thanks, all clear answers by Alive. Now what is left is that I better try to get those units (pre)approved by our local SAN (presume similar as your MOT) here in Switzeland. Something for beginning next year, will first discuss with the local LR dealer here how best to approach that. One more question for Alive Tuning, if before approaching our SAN I would like to get full info of technical specs, including light output, etc. for these LED units, you probably can provide those, yes?
Tks, and happy holidays, Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

But the main external screen is glass (very robust due to the MIL specs.)
