I'm on my second TDS 9.5 which I can't fault in terms of speed and pulling power. However, having recently taken it off the defender and put it on the 80, it had been sitting around for a while and the drum had seized. So, me and a mechanic friend took it to pieces and the grease inside had become contaminated with water (christ, the smell ). Took all the gears out, cleaned everything in brake fluid then lubed it with white grease as opposed to the thick stuff, put it back together and sealed any leak points with RTV. Now works like new.
So whilst you're sitting bored at home over christmas, to dodge the inevitable family argument, you can say "I need to service my winch" and crack on with it Only took about an hour from start to finish - helps if you have access to an airline though to blow the big lumps of grease out.
