Here’s my solution, can get my 3/4 bike rack on. It looks a bit precarious but is solid enough!

Another thing to consider with the difference between the D200/D250 and D300 is the brake callipers and disc sizes are bigger so you aren't just paying for more power but bigger brakes too.
