Well, I disconnected the solenoid and took her for a spin.
Sure enough, the switch on the dashboard no longer had any effect ........ but after 20mins, she dropped into OD, then out again and it seem ...

That sounds logical.
The speed sensor was supposedly bypassed using a kit from Devon 4x4. I didn't do it as i'm a numpty with wiring. It was done by ACC16 who built a dashboar ...

Apologies if GKN issues are anodyne here, but I have trouble finding anyone local willing to touch the drive system of my 300TDI (1996).
In 1997 a GKN overdrive was fitted and worked perfectly ...
