i'd take a guess at battery. TD5 are VERY fussy about amps

The fuel pump should be off.
Under the drivers seat is a row of three / four relays, the fuel pump one is yellow (could be more than one yellow under there)

Got a 53 td5 defender.
Used everyday, it's my car, school runs, kids taxi service etc. etc....
Always starts first crank.
Saturday, drove 140 miles to clacton and back, no problems.
