What can I expect going from 1.667 to 1.410 in a t-box?
I have had this super annoying clunk going on for years that I've spent a fair amount of time & money trying to locate.

I've long been looking at getting an Ashcroft t-box in 1.410 ratio, but looking at my current t-box, it's labelled up as 1.667. From my research, this seems to be more of a 110 ratio but mine is a 90 (hardtop). This seems odd to me but hey, Defenders are essentially big Meccano sets after all so it's not impossible.

My use case is about 30 motorway miles a day and a bit of laning, and the odd pay & play site. I'm also a member of my local 4x4 response group, so recoveries are entirely possible.

It seems 1.410 was a standard Defender ratio. I'm sure it's a bit of a silly question but what can I expect out of the 1.410, which will save me an extra £100 outlay? 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop

Odds are that your transferbox is actually 1.410 and not 1.667. For some reason, a number of them had the incorrect sticker put on the casing.

My old box was a 1.410 marked as a 1.667.

The serial number will tell you exactly what you have. Charlie

1.6 is a bit of a rarity just for early 110s. I have a standard tdi 110 on a 1.4 T-box and running slightly bigger tyres (33") and don't find myself struggling for gearing when pulling away on a steep hill or flat out (85mph+) on the motorway. If it were my choice, I would go 1.4 all day long. Many people go 1.2 ratio but on paper, and I guess in practice, this will take the edge off acceleration and risks being a bit gutless when flat out with needing to drop into 4th more frequently when facing any inclines?

Were the 1.667 ratio used on the 2.5 normally aspirated engines (12J). They would have needed the lower ratio due the lower engine torque especially with a heavy 110. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thank you all so much for the info. It's really been bugging me. I'll take a note of that serial number and I'll definitely make sure I add the 1.410 to my basket!

Makes me laugh that 1.410s were labelled up as 1.667!

I have thought about the 1.2 but I'd like to retain its Defenderness, even at the expense of fuel consumption. 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop

90 TD5's will easily pull 1.2 gearing and a V8 5th gear makes them much nicer on the motorway, never heard of 1.6 stickers on wrong transfer box? in 45 years of professional Land Rover repair

Box is stamped 13D, and according to the LT230 info on this page - http://www.red90.ca/rovers/gears.html - that makes it a 1.667.

Dealer who sold it to me said he thinks it's been mapped. In my 4 years with it, I have to disagree. It being 1.667 is probably where that idea comes from.

Edit #2: Nope, I think I’m being a tit? Looks like 43D? Which is 1.410?

When I had a Td5 90 that had a T box labelled as 1.6. But if it was a 1.6 box I would have had a lot lower top end speed and much more revs/noise. You wouldn’t want to do motorway with a 1.6 box.

I tend to travel along at 60 on motorways. I can hit 80 but it is screaming its arse off there, and 70 is just a bit too loud to cruise along at.

I don't know what it's like driving a standard Def other than my own. It's either been a beast of a 90 200TDi, or a mapped 110 TD5. 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop

Yep same on my Td5 110. 80 kph (50 mph) is perfectly fine, 90 kph (55mph) is getting noisier, 100kph (60mph) is getting annoyingly noisy quickly. Any faster is basically hearing protection required. Standard 1.4 transfer case

I just pulled the trigger on a roamerdrive which should cut back on the noise significantly

thats a 43D, not 13D, the 13D is a good number but was stamped in a diferent place and stamped as opposed to the 43D witch is dot punched, both are 1.410 ratio,

the 90's never had the 1.667, only 2.5 N/A 110's

note the early 2.5 N/S 110 1.667's were stamped 12D Dave

this was simply a sticker error on early TD5's, they were stamped 43D, were 1.410 ratio but had 1.667 stickers in error !! Dave

Generally yes, but only LWB I think and most of them being MoD vehicles.

The 1.6 was also used with the BMW 2.8 six pot in the S African 90 and I suspect may have been used in the Italian Army 2.0 MPI 90's too, but would need to check up on the latter.
