assuming it is the adaptor shaft replace with ASHCROFT, IRB or LOF improved arrangement, I have ASHCROFT and its outlasted 2 originals so far, however it could just be a drive shaft flange DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Agreed, if it is there is no point in fitting an OE one so I will try to get hold of the LOF extreme kit Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |

Usually a loss of drive with scary noises is either the gearbox output adaptor shaft (mentioned above) or a rear axle drive flange. The easy way to check is to engage the centre diff lock and establish if drive is restored. If it is, the problem is a drive flange (and you can carefully continue your journey). If you still have scary noises instead of motion it will be the adaptor shaft and you'll need recovery.
When doing the diff lock test do make sure that it's genuinely engaged, they can stick if not used periodically, so check the light comes on. An alternative test, not requiring the CDL, is to get someone to look underneath the vehicle at the propshafts as you try to drive. If a propshaft is turning, it's a drive flange (or halfshaft or diff) which has failed. If neither propshaft is turning, it's the adaptor shaft (or clutch, gearbox, or transfer box) which has failed. |

A lot to read on this thread: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59735.html
But do make sure that the transfer box has not jumped out of gear. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
