Workshop Manual, Defender, MY2007- ON
see page 564 of 1212 "The EGR cooler receives exhaust gas ....blabla .... engine operation. At engine switch off the valve opens and closes several times to clear any deposits which may have accumulated during running." Yup, we know what the "chukka-chukka" sound is, it's the "beep" that is mystery! |

No, I reckon that's the reason that most people can't hear it! |

Now that I'm paying more attention, I am also hearing a similar beep when starting the landy. Turn on the ignition and while wait for the glow plug warning light to go out, have a good listen --

I always had this as well, on ignition and after the chukkas x3. Seemed normal to me. Actually it psyches me up to fire up the Landy 2012 Fuji White 110 Flattened |

This is the sound of the standard car, with EGR enabled... (Thanks Naks)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVk-oxSZbNM This is what our EGR shut mod does... Absolutely nothing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvWjdzKof7U You can hear a short high pitched, servo kind of noise. To be honest, this video was made early on this year, and I cannot remember what i had set the duration to. It's since been set to 50ms and so cannot be heard at all. Over here we have no choice but to have an EGR to make the vehicle comply with various emissions legislation. People have had erratic running due to the EGR sooting up . There has been work done to remove the EGR or fit a "blanking plate"to effectively stop it doing it's job. Some say this gives smoother running but your ECU needs to be fooled into thinking that the EGR is still doing it's job. This is the difficult bit. Various experiments have been done with blanking plates with various size holes to get the smallest one possible to fool the ECU into thinking everything is normal. Don't think there is a perfect one yet. If your country does not have the same emissions legislation as us you probably do not need an EGR but if one is fitted to your Puma you are probably stuck with it until someone comes up with a solution for removing it, without getting fault codes etc from the ECU. There will be someone on later with more technical info so stay tuned. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
