Australia 2001 Defender 110 Td5 SW Fuji White
CDL.
Just an observation. Wished I'd known earlier how inadequate the factory TD5 CDL is. Been steadily modding my 2001 110 and have gone through 2 of these units now. Have now fitted an Ashcroft unit which will hopefully take the power and extra load better. Everything else is upgraded without issue. Nothing suggests poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape.

I can only assume he is talking about the transfer box. Which is odd as it’s generally held to be the most robust bit of transmission that LR ever made.

what now?

I don't think I've ever hard of a CDL failing on a Defender, UNLESS there was PEBKAC involved Whistle --

Yes, I am talking about the centre diff. lock. Probably OK with everything stock, but inadequate with much increased torque loads. Nothing suggests poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape.

I highly doubt that, I've been running BAS remap on mine since 2010 and done loads of off-roading since then with zero issues.

We did a 5-week trip in Namibia a while ago where the CDL stayed locked for +-4 weeks on all sorts of gravel roads.

The two piece cross pins break don't they where they cross one another as they half diameter at that point. Ashcroft do a one piece HD upgraded cross pin https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/hd-cross-pin/

The planet gears friction weld themselves to the crosspin too where the open diff is subject to wheelspin. > 110 XS Double Cab

The LT230 is generally quite proven, many have been used completely standard pushing 450+bhp in racing environments.

If you don't lock the centre diff and constantly spin the open diff with high load differentials, e.g. on slippery surfaces such as sand and things. Then yes, you can break/wear them. But that is more abuse than anything. With the diff in the locked position they should be fine for this kind of use.

Those are the weak points, along with the intermediate gear shaft which can stretch the holes in the casing. Hence the frequent leaks from that region.

But apart from those the LT230 is a great gearbox Thumbs Up

No issues with the transfer case. Always lock the CDL when necessary, but on ashphalt and dirt roads 200 HP, 35s and lockers take a toll! Thrust washers shredded etc. Nothing suggests poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape.

So you're complaining about the centre diff itself, not the centre diff lock as per the thread title. No wonder there has been confusion!

The diffs fail quickly if wheels are spun unlocked, they're tough as hell when locked. Best bet is to fit an Ashcroft ATB centre diff.

The last LR centre diffs with the value-engineered centre are horrible and should be avoided!

Sorry. Out here we call it a centre diff lock unit. Agree, it works well locked, just unsatisfactory when open and trying to handle bulk torque. Nothing suggests poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape.
