At 107,000 miles, I've just had the input shaft oil seal, the O rings on the Ashcroft adapter, and the rear diff pinion seal replaced - all weeping very slowly, and not an MOT failure for excessive leaking. Didn't seem unreasonable on the mileage they had done. Worth doing everything while the transfer box was off.

Dropped the gearbox oil this morning. Was brown! The area that I cleaned off yesterday at the tell tale had a small bit of oil again this morning, so looking like transfer box.

If it is then that’s the easier of the two seals to change as no need to remove the adaptor shaft.

Am I right in thinking this will either be leaking from the input shaft seal or the intermediate shaft seal? If it’s the latter, am I also right in thinking that there is a risk that the hole it sits in will be misshaped and in which case as a minimum I need a new housing? If it’s the latter I couldnt swap this myself which would lead me down the road of a complete replacement.

Hi Col, I had another look at your photo, and noticed you have this green fluid on the mounting bolt. When my box was leaking, I only got oil coming through the weep hole of the adaptor housing. So yours baffle me.

If the intermediate shaft in the TC is leaking, it could be as simple as an O ring that has become square profiled and lost its sealing capabilities. So replace O rings to resolve. There are known problems that the casing holes ovals, but that can also be fixed by sleeving it. But given the green fluid location, I doubt that is the problem. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Cheers Dinnu. The oil on the bolt I am assuming has travelled back down the box towards the bolts as I have been driving along with the wind resistance. I had just travelled back from Scotland the day before.

This weekend I’ll clean the whole thing back to within an inch of its life, check the oil level and then keep monitoring. The top half of the gearbox and transfer case is bone dry, so I’m sure it’s not something leaking above and tracking down. Time will tell!

Checked again tonight and the greeny blue fluid is back at the tell tale hole. Above this after is dry. I took the cubby box out yesterday and remove the inspection cover and there are no fluids leaking from above.

I Drained a small amount from the transfer box tonight and it is a nice clean golden colour (changed about 6-7k ago). I’m stumped! Is there anything that could cause the oil to discolour as it leaks? What colour is the grease supplied for the more recent LR gearbox output shafts? Could that be contaminating a leak from the gear box? I’m absolutely lost!

Mine looks like a watered down version of this! Which suggest that perhaps either the gearbox output seal, or the transfer box input seal is leaking and is getting contaminated by the assembly grease on the output shaft?

Any help or thoughts would be massively appreciated.

Air con condensate drain dumps on top of the gearbox - anything washing down from that?

- on a side note, we were queuing for the ferry to St Malo a few years ago & someone pointed out I was losing fluid underneath, quick check & it wasn't oil but tasted sweet & was blue so obviously anti freeze and was in the general area of the fuel cooler. We decided to board anyway and look again in the daylight. Loaded on the ferry went to get daughter out of the rear seat and found her 1/2 empty blue slushy drink tipped over on the rear floor....!

I cannot think of any green fluids used on a tdci - coolant is orange, gear oil / clutch fluid amberish - air con fluid is fluorescent green, best vote would be screen wash tracking down possibly from the pipe in the cant rail that goes to the back door?

Definitely no slush puppies!! Air con drain leaks through further forward.

I’ll ring the guy that replaced the output shaft and double check the colour of the assembly grease, but general internet consensus is that it is blue! When I dropped the gearbox oil, that was brown and dirty. The transfer box was clean and the blue juice looks clean, feels oily, just the wrong colour so putting 2 and 2 together and I might be getting 4.

My MY2015 had blue drops from the hole nearby that others have noticed as well - presumably from over zealous lubrication of the output shaft in an attempt to solve the known problem - it cleared up / stopped after a few 1000 miles…. I did think yours might have been that but didn’t feel qualified to say!. When did you have the shaft replaced ?

Shaft was done about 2 years back. Has only had the leak for about 3 weeks now.

Just for completeness in case somebody is searching this thread in the future:

I’ve spoken to the guy who did my output shaft and apparently it is an assembly grease/Andy seize paste sort of thing that comes with the LR replacement shaft. And it is blue. Thumbs Up

Mine blue oil is thin, similar to the oil in my LT230, so the consensus is that is leaking from the input seal and either tracking down the shaft and picking up some blue grease colour on the way, or more likely the grease has been applied so liberally for fear of the shaft eating itself that it has been thrown all over the inside of the adaptor housing and is staining the oil as it dribbles over it.

The other thing that points to the LT230 is that the blue oil is clean. The oil in the LT230 was also clean. The oil in my gearbox, which was about 30k old was much darker brown, dirty oil.

I was planning on fitting a stage 2 LT230 from Winchester gears, so this is just the excuse I need!!
