Separating disc from hub
Replacing (edit: rear) brake discs on my 130. Got the hub off, turn it over, remove five bolts holding the brake disc in place… and then… it doesn’t move a bit. Attempts to persuade it unsuccessful so far, gave up for the evening before I’m tempted to whack it too hard… checked Haynes, it says “slacken and remove the bolts securing the disc to the hub assembly, and separate the two”. Well then.

Is there a magic trick to make the two pop apart without doing damage?

If you’re replacing the disc then just use a hammer to shock them off the hub.

Cleaning around the join and applying some penetrating oil may help.

If your discs are getting a bit thin, its easy to snap disc off the bell.ie snap the disc into two pieces

I don’t think the disc is thin enough for that. I’m replacing it because it has disintegrated in a strange way, perhaps because the pad was gone.

I’ve had that before on mine, caused by salt corrosion. I’ve also snapped a disc off while trying to remove as above.

You shouldn’t have to hit it too hard unless it’s really seized on there. Work around it gradually as you start to see it separate as it needs to come off more or less straight.

I’ll get on it tomorrow. Sure it’ll come off - was just wondering if I missed something. I changed a couple discs before, but it’s been a few years and as far as I remember they came off without a hitch.

Large rubber mallet, if that doesn’t work, sledge hammer.

It’s a Defender, not a delicate swiss watch…

Copper hammer, hold hub in vice and hit disc. Or hold disc. Cheers

Czech Republic 1999 Defender 130 Td5 HCPU Baltic Blue
On a bit older TD5 130 i was using hydraulic press. Brake discs were worn, but not the hub. It took 5t of force to remove the old disk. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Alright, that’s sorted now - I held the hub in a vice and whacked the brake disc quite a while with a lump hammer before it came off, but eventually it did. Thanks everybody for confirming I wasn’t on the wrong track!
