I would. Not completely safe, but just be aware of what could go wrong, and be prepared. Four decent axle stands under the axles will keep the UJ’s and props pretty much at the angles you are getting the noise. Be really careful letting the clutch out and control all the movements being very careful which way, and what it’s facing.
I was getting a rattle off my front diff when I had a tdci. Was a broken shaft inside it. Wouldn’t call it a tik though more of a knock. |

Hmmm, that’s another possibility busted half shaft it’s sound and the effect of it could have may depend upon the angle of how it has broken if it has. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

If you pull the diff, your looking for missing teeth. Drop the oil first, if there are teeth missing you’ll soon know.

Are the hubs extra warm? Try checking the wheel might already have done so but another thing to try. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

poss been asked before, but its not a loose brake pad? thats banging around? Could happen if a piston is stuck in and the pad is now loose? Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

A couple of thoughts.
First, I had a click from somewhere around my front left wheel. I thought it was the backing plate rubbing so I tried bending it away from the wheel. I convinced myself that made the clicking less bad but it was still there. I usually have the radio on loud anyway. However reading your post has made me realise that the click has gone. I’m wondering if the garage fixed it during the last service. They told me that the front callipers were sticking and they’d needed to take them apart and grease them. I wonder if the front left brake was sticking on a little or maybe the callipers or pads were a little loose and everything is now tighter after they bolted things back on? My second thought is whether it might be worth checking if the clicking frequency matches the rotation of your half shafts / wheels. Perhaps at a constant speed, count the clicks per minute & calculate the wheel rotations per minute & see if they match? Just to help check that’s the right area to be looking? Best of luck & hope you get to the bottom of it soon. |

Boys from the club used to put zip ties on propshafts for a laugh which made a ticking noise
loosen off or tighten the hand brake adjuster and see if the noise changes? 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |
