Intermittent power loss
Ey up,

I've had my 2008 2.4 for a week,

It's got about 70k miles on, an alive stage 1 remap and silicone intercooler hoses.

Occasionally when I drive from cold or warm, it'll make no power bit plenty of black smoke, it's as though the turbo isn't spooling.

If I turn the engine off and on, it'll do it again straight away. If I lock and unlock, then start the problem clears.

Does anybody have a clue what this could be? Thanks in advance

Plug in and look for DTCโ€™s.
If you donโ€™t have that available to you,
lube your turbo actuator pivot points.

Try cleaning your MAF and MAP sensors (donโ€™t touch use brake or MAF cleaner only).
Check air filter.
Consider changing the VCV, look at all the above first before this though.

Ideally you want to have it plugged in to find the codes if any are present for faults. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thanks for that, my cheap obdii scanner returned no codes, so I'll clean everything and lube the turbo pivots tomorrow and see what happens.

One of the few things that doesnโ€™t flag a DTC is the VCV. When that fails or is risking it doesnโ€™t show anything up.
Turbo actuator can get sticky, best to remove the upper linkage carefully and operate wastegate by hand then lube be careful not to lose the circlip.

Or if you want to be on the safe side lube the pivot points in situ for now and leave it at that.

Worth trying anyway. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Just an update, I followed your advice and cleaned/lubed everything. The problem hasn't been back since and I've got a spare vcv just in case.

Ugh, the problem came back so I swapped the vcv for a new one, I didn't do the learning program because I don't have the capability.

Exactly the same thing happens, sometimes it's fine, others I've got no power and loads of smoke. Crying or Very sad

I'll dismantle the actuator tonight and lube properly.
