Burn Smell- New Defender
Guys
Got my Defender delivered last week after months and months of waiting . On the 3rd day of driving less than 120kms on the odometer , I backed up the car with my family to the driveway, to a smell of plastic/metal burning in the cabin

currently in the dealership . Doesn't seem to be a common issue from a google search for a Defender . thanks in advance

Normally I wouldn’t be to concerned on a new car as many items have a protection layer on that will burn off on the first couple of uses, but when you said you could smell something electrical which is a distinctive toxic smell, you have done the right thing not using it and getting it to the dealer Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

The first DPF regen on my D200 was pretty pungent, may just be that. But better safe than sorry, hopefully you get to the bottom of it Thumbs Up 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Ours did that for the first 2000 miles .
We still get the burning smell occasionally but I’ve put it down to the DPF https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Wouldn’t have expected a regen after only three days old, but stranger things happen. When it does regen you’ll certainly know about it as the DPF will generate a lot of heat to burn off the particulates. Ride like you stole it!!

Thanks . I think Dealership thinks the same and mention about stickers etc from factory burning. But they continue to test driver and waiting for the JLR UK to provide them with updates. I will update when they finally tell if anything wrong or can pick up the car . thanks all

Why would a 3 day old car do a DPF regen, you cannot have driven vast distances in the city in that time to need a regen? Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Might be programmed in to set up the DPF.
My new 2015 Defender did an active regen after a few days and a couple of hundred miles, despite no journey being less than 26 miles.
As my first vehicle with a DPF it was pretty scary. I too thought the car had a major problem. The smell and fumes were impressive, as the regen finished just as I was parking up at home.
Hope the problem for the OP is as simple as that.

JLR returned the Defender . They said no issues were identified but could be once off overheating of components. I hope that's the case too. Thank you all for the feedback . appreciated

I had some 'burning smells' in the first 1,000km of owning the car. Mainly when I was revving it a lot getting through snow and up the mountains, no smoke though. I chalked it down to just the car being new with the reasons other have said. Haven't smelled anything since. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof

Hi Guys,

I work for a different motor manufacturer and all of our vehicles that are shipped overseas have additional wax coating sprayed under the vehicle to protect then on the sea crossing and this is what I expect is causing the problem. for vehicles sating here we use a smaller amount so should burn of after one or two long drives.

Great thanks for that information , Dealership thought the same , but the amount of smoke was scary.

I still find the Defender's bonnet to be hotter than my other petrol cars (never owned a Diesel car before) ,even after a 20 mins of driving, specially after I stopped the car and parked . assuming heat trapped is escaping and heating up the bonnet while the fans , cooling system is shutdown. otherwise all seems ok for now

l've had this a few times with my new 90, mileage is currently 420 from new.

I assumed it was the DPF but it's happened from cold as well. Everything seems okay though.

Had my car investigated by the tech at local JLR. They couldn’t find anything wrong and car has been ok since . Good luck
