My 2002 90 HT had solid front discs but I swapped them to vented shortly after I got it.
However, with no ABS and BFG Muds it will lock up under heavy breaking in the wet |

Do vented discs improve performance or did you have the same breaking on solid discs?

Vented cool faster, so less chance of brake fade.
If you know how to use proper engine brake, vented discs are not really necessary in my opinion. Unless you are always fully loaded. I thought cooling was the reason for vented as I would assume the friction on the disk is more determined by the pistons in the calipers.

I used to have some ex Salisbury (front) axle vented brakes on an old 90 (actually a couple of old 90's as I swapped them over), the vented bits were HUGE... I could poke a finger into them, the whole disc was nearly twice as thick as a normal vented one. But the overall braking was no better, just less fade (although I never noticed any difference between those and normal vented ones) |

From what I can remember, the callipers are the same from a braking perspective, they just have a spacer in the centre to allow for the extra width of the vented disk.
That said, my td5 90 is close to the weight limit before I put anything in it and regularly tow 3.5t and have never experienced the brakes fade on me and I still run solid disks all around. Although I do use engine braking at pretty much every opportunity and use the brakes as little as possible |

You are correct Jimbo, the only difference between the 4 pot solid and vented setup is a pair of spacers between the two halves of the caliper in the vented version. So braking effort will be the same between them. The only way initially to improve the braking efficiency is to fit better pads, discs and perhaps DOT 5.1 fluids. After that it is a case of upgrading the entire axle setup, caliper, disc, pads to something bigger.
I have experienced brake fade twice in Miffy (D110) and both times when descending very steep mountain roads and it is something I care not to experience again if possible ![]() ![]() The brakes on the Defender are excellent when in A1 condition, the key thing is to keep the components in A1 condition so everything that needs to move is free to do so. If you live here in Wales, then refresh the fluid frequently to offset the vast amount of rain and standing water you drive through. After 12 months the fluid can be quite contaminated and performance reduced. I am in the process of generally sorting out Miffs braking system and key to this are the refurbing of the calipers with SS pistons and a new brake servo. The latter is not a LR item but a Bearmach one because it has increased internal volume (much chunkier in shape) and reputedly better braking. Whether that is true or not only time will tell. I am not looking for massive improvement just bringing the braking back up to peak efficiency. As said in the Miffy thread the only unknown at the moment is the condition of the brake biasing valve. After 19 years and 225k miles the O-rings in that thing must be getting flat and who knows if it is actually regulating the braking pressure between the front and rear or not... ![]() Every job we learn a little more about our vehicles ![]() |
