Cleaning out intercooler
Sadly I've just had a catrastrophic turbo failure on our TD5 and am in the process of stripping out everything from turbo round to EGR valve for cleaning prior to fitting new turbo.( hate turbo -> exhaust nuts .... but a dremmel is your friend)

Fair amount of oil in the intercooler so I filled it with Gunk Ultra de-greaser for the night and emptied it the next morning.

Question is , do i need to do any more flushing out of any de-greaser that might be left in there b4 putting it back in, and oif so what with ?

Intercooler is an allisport one and checked with them to see if degreaser would be o.k.

As above petrol or brake cleaner. You NEED to know what you’ve put in there will disappear. Using petrol or brake cleaner means you know it will evaporate so not be ingested. Although you have to wait for it to evaporate.

I've done it successfully with parafin in the past. After cleaning though, I did flush it through with water and then used a hairdryer to dry out the inside before refitting. Darren

And as it happens I've just ordered 5 ltres of brake cleaner.
Waiting for it to evaporate not a problem given the fun i'm havimng removing the exhaust down pipe -> turbo nuts.

What happened to your turbo? Mines on 135,000 miles, was there any warning of the failure?

well in this case i wasnt out driving when it hapened, my wife was and she said there was a loud rattling noise from "front left" and complete lack of power.

Gertie the 110 has done 220K miles and we've done 135K of that, suspect it was te original one

She managed to drive back home very slowly with clouds of white / grey smoke and got her onto the drive.

Think was really lucky. Took hoses off from turbo to intercooler and it was full of oil. oil in intercooler and in hose from 'cooler to EGR valve.

Got a new turbo to replace it. Main clue was when i grabbed hold of the impeller shaft in the old turbo, it really isn't supposed to waggle about that much.

5 ltrs of brake cleaner just arrived, going to clean everything with that and rinse out any remaining degreaser from intercooler .

Also going to remove sump just to see what's in there

if intake impeller has been damaged parts from it can migrate through the intercooler and pipework into the intake manifold and ultimately the cylinder head, when cleaning the intercooler see if you get any shrapnel out, that may indicate debris has passed through the system. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

As above and with some white kitchen role wipe inside the intake manifold and see if any metal particles made it that far. If so then it is a certainty they are in your cylinders. As your TD5 has done 220k miles then it is a good time to pull the head, check it over for cracks and inspect the cylinders for debris and scoring. You may be lucky and all it will need is a hone and rebuild. Mind you, if you're doing a cylinder hone then expect to replace the piston rings and crank bearings as well. Some may say just get a wrecker engine and that is the other option, but you never know what has happened to it. Coin toss decision.

As for the cleaning of an intercooler I flush through with petrol to remove the oil and sludge. Really spend time sloshing it back and forth to clean out all the internal channels. Empty. Leave remnants to evaporate. Don't forget to thoroughly clean the external fins with plenty of hot soapy water. Afterwards I tend to attach an old hair dryer to one of the ports and pass warm air through the intercooler to make sure it is bone dry inside and out. Works well and a simple DIY method.

Intercooler cleaned with combination of gunk ultra and brake cleaner.

Lots of sloshing round and ended up using my hot air gun ( low setting) to dry it out.

All silicone hoses thoroughly cleaned inside and out

yup paper in the imitation EGR valve and couldnt see any lumpybits there.

After lots of battlnig with exhaust down pipe nuts managed to remove the old turbo

Bought a turbo technic VVT to put in its place.


[geobloke] engine was just back from fitting a replacement head from engine I had in the garage


one small problem (if you've seen one of the VVTs is fitting the oil feed hose to the turbo.... on an std one thert is enough room to get a socket/spanner in there to remove the banjo bolt. on this one theres just about enough room to get two finger in there to screw bolt in losely, certainy no room for socket or spanner... and it needs to be a 14mm one!

Just wonfering if i need to invest in a laser toolds super slim spanner to get at it!

if this engine is dead, got another 11 TD5 turbo can go on while this gets refettled
