If your Defender is the TD5 in your avatar, fitting a 1.2 box will raise, rather than drop, the gearing, by about 15%.

Probably didn’t phrase that correctly then. I’m looking to lower the engine Revs as it’s mostly used on road.

That makes sense! Ideally you need a Puma transfer box but you could use a Disco2 box and swap the rear output stage from your existing one (for the Speedo drive) and if need be swap the difflock parts as well. Puma would be easier if you can find one.

Disco1s also had 1.2 ratio. However still half way into the 300tdi builds, the input gear was not yet drilled. So if you find a good earlier TC that does not have the drilled input gear, factor in the cost to replace the input gear (start at £55 from Ashcroft), plus perhaps a new set of bearings, £26, and shims and labour.
