Side lights on with ignition
I recently had an issue where as soon as I turned the ignition on the front and rear side lights were illuminated even though the light switch was off.
I did several searches on the forum and Google, without success so I thought I would quickly post what I found in case anyone else had the misfortune to experience this in the future.
The vehicle was a 2.4 but it should apply to any Puma. To identify the issue I presumed I had either got a “short” or a reverse feed so I simply pulled under dash fuses one at a time to try and identify the circuit causing the problem. ( Side lights left side, are on F18, and side lights right side, are on F19 ) When I pulled F20 the side lights went off. F20 is the dash/ switches illumination feed. I then disconnected everything with an illumination feed one at a time. The side lights went off when I disconnected the passenger heated seat switch. Just to confirm the culprit was the switch and not the wiring, I swopped the Driver / Passenger seat heater switches which transferred the problem to the right seat heater. I then disassembled the seat heater switch and found that pin 1 ( +ve) and pin 2 (illumination) were shorted. This turned out to be the internal tracking had lifted off the plastic slightly. Although I pushed it back to cure and test, I have subsequently replaced the switch to be on the safe side. This got me thinking as to why the tracking had lifted ( heat?) . I checked the fuse (F33) and this had a 30 Amp fuse in which I replaced with a 20 A which it should have had.
Everything is now as it should be, but just in case you suffer the same issues, check the switches for a short on the dash illumination circuit (Fuse 20)
Thank you forum members for giving me the confidence and understanding to tackle this.
I just hope I can fix the next problem that arises.
