Just had the shop plug in a diagnostic computer and run some tests. They were going back and forth with some experts and came up with a theory. Faulty alternator which messed up the crankshaft signal.
So they disconnected the alternator belt and voila, the idling problem went away. However, the crankshaft signal is still not perfect.. |

You could try the earth connection between the battery and the chassis and engine/gearbox.
Otherwise it can be the sensor or the cable to it, both are known to give problems. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

Thanks Roel,
I had a good look at the earth connections and give them a polish. But they were looking pretty good, so I don't think that's the problem. I also got a new alternator and mounted it. Fingers crossed now, but I think that solved the problem! Haven't experienced any issues so far at least. I'll still swap the crankshaft sensor when it arrives. Thank you all for investing your time in this! It means the world to a novice like myself |

You can get a lot problems with variable reluctance sensor ( crankshaft sensor ) i.e. wire coil wand around magnet. if screen wire is damage and or not air gap correct or metal swarf on end the sensor
glad to see that you up & running. long winded job but at lest you fond problem i.e. charge alternator |
