Would you buy it?
OK, so my search for the best 110 I can get for my limited budget has landed on this one. I haven't seen it in the flesh (it's a 5 hour round trip), but wanted to get some views having asked all the questions I think I can of the vendor.

Run down as follows:

2003 (03) Td5 110 CSW in Oslo Blue
191,000 miles on the clock
Recently sold to a Land Rover Diagnostics/Servicing garage who are selling it on
Good bulkhead and chassis (backed up by photos)
VIN numbers all match and seems pretty much as built, with the exception of a snorkel
No ABS or Anti-Lock Brakes according to Topix
Last owner had it for 6 years, drove it to Russia, came back and hardly used it in the last 2 years
Mileage story reflected by MoT history: 65,000 in years 0-3, about the same again years 3-6, 35,000 in years 6-9, 25,000 in years 9-12, and only done 6,000 miles since Nov 2015
Has recently had a new clutch, DMF, and a gearbox rebuild
MoT history shows fails in 2009 (worn shock bushes), 2010 (headlamps, brake and fuel leaks), 2014 (worn shock bushes) and 2018 (door unable to be opened from the outside)

Seems to only need a bit of TLC, including new door bottoms which are starting to go. Otherwise it looks from the photos and video to be very tidy.

Is there anything I've missed? What would you pay?

It's difficult to say, though it would be around £8k at a guess?

A very good guess. Just above. Have seen plenty of older, scruffier models for much more than that. And plenty of Td5s (perhaps not with the same mileage, but still with a lot of TLC required) for well over £10k.

Should I be overly concerned about the high miles? Sadly, there's no service history, but stamps don't always mean a lot in any case.

I bought mine by ear, as soon as it started , that was it...sweet as a nut.
Service history in my opinion means d-ck.
I have just added a Femco sump plug, as it will get oil every 3k miles, nothing will be noted on the service book anyway.


The rusty nuts and bolts, worn bushes, corroded radiators etc can all be replaced easily!

However, even piles of crap demand high prices, it's whether you want to pay it and have a Defender, there's a lot better, nicer cars out there for £8K..
But, we are all on here for a reason.. illness.

Very hard to say with out viewing in person.


Pictures can look pretty good if that is all you have to go on? do you say its at a garage (as you would have a bit more comeback) then a private buy?


You have however 2 further options I guess?


Ask on the forum is anyone near, someone maybe able to go and look and hopefully give you an actual opinion rather than what the sales person wants you to hear?


Get a independent review done on it, many companies would offer this including the big ones like the AA



Personally for me and cars I would go and see it... Many cars I have bought are miles away and have some great cars by widening my search. Could you go and see it with a trailer in case you did buy?


Spending what I assume is a fair amount you want to get the 'feel' and have a poke around.

Thanks. It's for sale by a Land Rover specialist (diagnostics and servicing – I think they bought it off a customer after the clutch had gone, did the work and are now selling it on). I did think about seeing if I could pay a local LR indie to go and check it over, or as you say pay a couple of hundred quid for an independent inspection.

I don't mind driving over to see it, then getting the train back over to collect if I bought it.

I will add, if the door bottoms are gone, the tops will be too, my 606 110 had the rear door handles held on with silicone...as good as Bluetooth technology..kinda floating!!

191,000 is not a high mileage, it is only about 12k per annum, and is in fact substantially lower than my '07 TDCi.

The only thing that would put me off it is that it is a Td5 not a TDCi, but that is just down to personal preference.

That figures, it's a Td5! if it has had a full clutch including DMF fitted, assuming that no Britpart compnents were used, that is a plus point.

Thanks. I appreciate it's not high mileage for the age of the vehicle, but it might be in terms of the engine. My budget won't get me anywhere near a TDCi unfortunately.

Just make an appointment and an appointment with an indie and go there. Take the 110 to the indie and be there yourselves. You will learn a lot more if you see it for yourself.

It may cost you something if you don't buy it but you will have a good feeling either way.

I did that when I bought my D3 G4 from Nene Overland that involved a flight and a train and a boot on the way back. Shocked I got a 3 months guarantee and I needed to use that but it was worth it I drove it for 10 years. Roel

You shouldn't even consider buying it without seeing it, and go with an open mind. If you don't like anything walk away. If you want to think about it walk away, you can always go back. You should be prepared to travel as far as it takes when buying a vehicle.

To clarify, I have no intention of buying any vehicle sight unseen. Just wanted to get views/opinions before committing to a journey. Should have been clearer in the OP.

As it is, a very generous forum member has offered to go and take a look for me tomorrow. I can then decide whether or not it's worth the trip.

I have bought my last 3 vehicles unseen. The last being my 130.

Price for miles works.

I would want clarification it was the clutch that it went in for and that's all that was wrong with it. Sounds like it went for work, was priced too high to fix so he sold it to them?! Or pxd? Cheers
