Curious. I have never (yet) met a Puma with a bad gear change and the worst Puma had been better than the best R380 I've met! Although there are many driveline issues with the Puma, the MT82 seems to be about the best bit.

It's actually quite difficult to assess accurately the centre diff backlash without dismantling the box, and a lot of the lash blamed on the diff is usually elsewhere.

I have to agree with Blackwolf on gearbox / gear changes. In my limited experience any issues are usually a result of something else......and I include friction plate as being something else.

that said I personally find the defender to be the most difficult vehicle I've ever driven in terms of getting nice smooth gear changes.

Backlash.... wear, from the diffs, driveshafts, transfer box, and props.... I have front and rear Ashcroft ATB’s and they initially removed all clocking and backlash, and it was a smooth gear change for about 2k miles, clonking is back to the last weak point in the drive train, the transfer box.

Going to get a ATB installed, along with a new output shaft.... but expect gearbox / clutch will give start to go next

I’ve been getting some persistent vibration through the drivetrain for sometime now and today took it to a garage in Launceston for a second opinion as nobody seems to be able to find the problem . Two hours later I got a call (impressed) to say that they are 99.9% sure that the transfer box has a bent output at both ends and has probably been in a severe shunt .
I hadn’t told them at this point that the Transfer box was a unit from Ashcroft with ATB and only 9 months old . When I did they said they weren’t surprised and no longer wish to deal with Ashcroft themselves .
My defender has never been in an accident and has covered a mere 3000 miles since replacing the box .
Has anyone got any thoughts on this ? It would explain a lot as all exploratory work into the vibrations has been on the basis that the transfer box is as new !!
