Just a heads up on my recent experience fitting the above.
Prior to starting the job, having read “Blackwolf’s” advice, I invested in the Locking Tool 308-701. ![]() Click image to enlarge A wise choice as I needed a 600mm breaker bar with an extension tube to free the 30mm bolt and the tool held everything firm without stressing the gearbox. And so on to yesterday when I came to install the Ashcroft Kit. Spot the problem: ![]() Click image to enlarge As you can see there are no notches in the Ashcroft Female Coupling to accept the Holding Tool. So I looked at the Ashcroft Website. ![]() Click image to enlarge I spoke to Mr Ashcroft. He informed me that they used to modify the Land Rover part but now have them made and they don’t accept the Holding Tool. His advice was to use an air gun. I explained It was DIY job so he suggested putting the vehicle in 5th gear. It doesn’t work. When you attempt to tighten the bolt to the recommended 133 ft.lbs torque, the gear train and engine just turns. Time for some improvisation. ![]() Click image to enlarge It held enough to torque the bolt up to the correct setting. If you look on Ashcroft’s website today. ![]() Click image to enlarge Last edited by keef9t on 1st Nov 2019 3:20pm. Edited 2 times in total |

The red tape is to stop the spanner damaging the threads of the viscous coupling.
I had previously tried locking the engine using the viscous coupling spanner with the fan in place but the serpentine belt just slipped. |

You may follow the produce indicated in the workshop manual, because I had my Ashcroft kit mounted by a Land Rover reseller.

How did you find room for a 600m breaker bar?

Well spotted, that man. I should stick to the feet and inches I was brought up with.
I’ll amend it so others will wonder what the hell we are talking about. |
