Fuel pump
Hi, I’m in the process of refurbishing my 2004 110 td5 I bought just over 2yrs ago , and last weekend I removed the fuel tank to get access
to the 2 body bolts that I sheared off as I was trying to renew them . They were in pretty bad shape ,rusted etc.
The 2 rear cradle bolts also sheared off😡
Since I have the tank out I thought I’d remove the fuel pump for inspection . It was making the usual whining sounds on start up but would go silent after a short period. The pump was very clean, no gunge / sludge of any kind.
My question is how do I know if it is the original pump or if it has been renewed. It is a vdo brand with a tag that reads
wfx000260 week 46 .
Should I replace it since I have it out or reuse it .

Mine whined on start up. It eventually gave up the ghost. The new one is completely silent. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

Its hard to say... I have had my 99 110 for five years and it has always whined until start up. Its whirrs away then after it starts its super quiet. No issues at all. I think they are just noisy as a Defender just doesn’t have much sound insulation and the FP is very easily accessible.

Personally my philosophy is consistent with “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”

Sorry for not responding to your replies earlier, between computer problems and work
I’m only getting round to thanking you for your help.
I took the pump out and it was in a pretty much clean state but cleaned it anyway ,
as was the tank. While disconnecting the fuel lines from the pump a yellow O ring came
out with one of the lines.
I put it back in but it seems to just sit there and not in a recess that I thought it should .
There are 2 other O rings behind this one a clear spacer type and a brown O ring
Does anyone know if the yellow O ring should be in a recess or sit loose.

Those O rings are a nightmare. Once they're out I couldn't get it back in. Essentially trashed a brand new sender unable to get it to seal to the fuel pipe. Tried everything I could to sort out. I was only replacing as the sender was faulty and I was getting a totally incorrect fuel level gauge because of it.

My pump, the old one and new, whirrs a little when it runs, of course it does, its pumping fuel. Then it stops. It shouldn't sound dreadful but just like its there, and its pulling fuel!

Had another look last night at the O ring set up. There is a circular clip that holds the O rings in place
and also accepts the fuel line when it is connected. It was missing from the pump but I found it still attached
to the fuel line ,Relief !
As the fuel lines were at an angle and under stress when I removed the tank ,
that said clip came off with the line.
To ensure a correct connection when I installed the tank I suspended it from the chassis with
nylon rope leaving enough room to connect the lines . I then lay under the tank hooked the
tank cradle to the rear mounts first and pushed the complete unit up to the bolt holes on the chassis
and started the bolts by a couple of threads.
