Electric vintage cars ?
Hi all
just read this on the BBC website .. taking the main elements from a scrap electric vehicle and fitting them into a vintage car ..
I like the idea on many levels but can see this being a way to help keep the defender going after its diesel sell-by date has been reached ...
Who else would fancy putting a Tesla power plant in their 110 ..!

I’ve mentioned it before on here. I will be swapping my horrid transit lump out for an EV as soon as it becomes viable. Pennies to run and loads more power. It’s a no brainier for me.

I'm completely up for it, when I find it affordable - I'm not sure what amount will be for me, maybe 7-8K for min. 150 mile range.
That would be good enough for my daily use, and for the 3 or 4 times a year I do longer trips I would put up with a charge-stop (or two) - my 50th had a range of 150 miles and I could live with that (just not the expense)!

I’ll be up for it, but there needs to be a way I can go several hundred miles or a few days somewhere without getting stranded. And that’s with the heater or ac on and wipers going.

If I was a forward thinking campsite owner I’d be looking to put charging points on some pitches as I reckon there is a lot of outdoors types that would like to go electric. I saw more Tesla’s than I ever have before on a run up to The Lakes last weekend, one towing a boat and another with canoe on the roof. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I saw that and thought, yes! I knew it'd only be a matter of time before this sort of industry sprang up. Short of somebody inventing Mr Fusion, then I see this as the path to long term Defender ownership. Darren

Yes, I would absolutely go for it, and as batteries get better, surely Vehicles converted early on would become upgradable, so even if the range is lower at the moment, it has the possibility of getting better. My only reservation is charge time, not sure if I like the idea of sitting at the services for hours waiting for my car to charge. if we get the infrastructure and of course batteries to support quick charging then I’m game!

Interesting... Do the published range of these electric vehicles (in general) take into account winter use, for example, headlights/heater on/demisters etc? I bet not...

Also the in case for a Land Rover/4x4 especially, the towing ability/range??

majority dont have any tow ability or loose their range massively if undertaken..................

we looked into the potential of a van at work but range / tow issues were impractical aside from the approx £60K+VAT price..........

Thinking about it, range of some of the latest is ones is not too bad. I think there is a Kia/Hyundai that will do 300 miles. Problem is, those are £15k cars with a petrol engine and they become £30k when you tick the electric option. Price needs to come down, which I'm sure it will, bigger question is when is the charging infrastructure, especially away from cities going to be up to the same level as petrol stations. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Friend of mine is putting one in a T3 camper. Not cheap. The motor was just shy of 10k and with the batteries and required mods to the floor, gearbox, suspension and brakes there will be another 15k on top and this is doing the work himself. LS3 conversion would be cheaper, and louder!

Not sure its not basically a 'sticking plaster' and a relatively short term fix given they are all basically coal powered in reality........

Suspect they will fall into the 'diesel gate' scenario in a few years time and we will be told to get on the Hydrogen or whatever fad is next.......
