Storage ideas/Trailer help

Morning, I am having a bit of a dilemma! My good lady & I like to do a bit of camping around the UK. I currently own a HT 90 with roof bars/roof box. I also use a Oztent RV4 that goes on the roof to. Now we are wanting to take our bikes away with us on these trips, currently i don't have anyway of putting the bikes on the landy, i am not comfortable with the bikes being put width way on the back of the spare wheel due to the type of MTB we have.

I have been toying with the idea of buying a Penman trailer, making a hard lid for it and securing the bikes that way and the other equipment. Is there any other trailers out there that i should consider, as my concern is having a Nato hook and not a ball on the landy then restricts me trailer wise, sometimes i pull other trailers and potentially will be pulling a car trailer in the future for my next landy project.

Any ideas are gratefully received, unfortunately I'm not in the money realms of one of these adventure trailers.

If you fitted a receiver hitch like the Safari Equip one, you could very easily swap between NATO and normal tow ball. Or I think you could do something similar with the adjustable height Dixon Bate sliders, have two slider and swap them as required. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I share your concerns on Nato hitches (I'm sure they're fine and many people use them but...). I therefore snapped up this trailer when I saw it for sale second hand. It just ticked all the boxes for what we wanted and we're very pleased with it. It does need quite a bit of weight in it to stop it boucing, but thats not normally a problem with our camping. It's great becuase all the camping gear lives in it so we just pack a bag, hitch up and go. The trailer was custom built for the original owner by Paranoid Industries.

I use an early narrow track Sankey which was converted to 50mm ball before I bought it.
I had some roof bars made for it and we’ve carried up to five bikes and camping gear all over the UK for

Unless you need the rugged capabilities of the Penman, or you just really want one, then you'd be better off with a more regular box trailer. It'll be a lot lighter, easier to store and manoeuvre, and use a 50mm tow ball.

I appreciate just really wanting one, though

The beauty of a Penman or Sankey is that if you stumble across a byway on your travels you can always have a detour, they were designed to be used off road 😊

The dixon bate sliders are my preferred solution, nice and easy to swap over!

I have a dixon bate set up with 2 slider plates --one with nato pintle and one with 50mm ball. 1 min job to switch over.

if you get the penman it has auto reverse, and you'll need the nato pintle, backing plate with sadlles for the breakaway cable and if you're fixing the pintle directly to the cross member best to have a load spreader plate on the inside of the cross member 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent

Got to echo the sentiment of the others, and using the dixon bate slider gives loads of flexibility.

Also means when not needed its a 10 second task to take it off and not have to continually straddle

the hitch when reaching into the back

The 50mm ball I've got mounted has a longer projection than the standard fitment though to avoid fouling the lower bar on the slide plate. Or a spacer behind the standard one would also work.

Ref the Maxxraxx, I've just purchased one and tested it at the weekend. Initially my plan was to mount it beind the 50mm ball, but the slider plate fouled the angled web on the mounting plate, so I purchased another slider plate to fit and use it with that.

Given mine is the 5 bike version, even if I figure out the mounting conundrum of fitting the nato hitch and maxxraxx mount together, the A frame wouldnt be long enough on the sankey not to damage at least one bike with the jockey wheel, and I'm pretty certain it would foul the tub as well.

Could be configured to mount on the rear of the sankey perhaps? 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Hello pux146,

I had the same issues as you. I ended up building this trailer. I get 4 bikes, camping gear and boards too. As you can see I dont travel very light!!! You can never have enough storage space.

Anyway, I 'm just in the process of painting the trailer to put it up for sale in the next week.

I had one that fitted perfectly across the width of an adventure rack

Cool trailer too, similar to one I saved a picture of for inspiration a few years back

I use a Thule bike rack if camping and taking bikes, fits 3 bikes folds down so you can get in boot.

We have camped many times with the 110 but now kids are bigger we need 4 bikes and with moving from site to site I'm fed up of packing just right so stuff fits in...even with a 110.

So I'm literally converting my Sankey to camp trailer and Cary bikes😊

Just making a cover that folds up so with tailgate open and bikes in we can still access.

No issue with NATO hook I have it on a separate drop plate can swap between normal towbar and this in seconds
