CB Radio Activates Wipers on Transmit
Hi,

Afraid this is all a bit new to me so it might be something really simple (hoping that is the case...)

Trying to fit a CB radio into our defender, for now just planning to take the radio out when not in use as not sure where I want to mount it so opted for power from cigarette lighter rather than hardening.

Got the antenna fitted and went to check the SWR, plugged in and all was fine, until pressed the transmit button, each time its pressed the windscreen wipers start going (link to video below)

Does anyone have any ideas? I would rather not wire direct to battery and I havn't been able to find a spare switched live...

Thanks,

Jon

Different Shocked

Have you checked the antenna is properly grounded, and the antenna cable doesn't have an internal short?

Does the antenna cable pass close to the wiper relay?

It is indeed! Use to my Range Rover doing all sorts of funny electrical tricks but the defender is usually fully functional!

Not sure about grounding, the mount came with the cable attached? Maybe I am missing something though? As I say new to CB radios... Any suggestions how to check for a short?

Antenna cable runs through the back door above the hinge, then down the rear window behind the plastic and behind the plastic underneath the side windows so think its far away from the relays.

Foil works well as a temporary shielding, possibly there is a shared ground path too with reverse voltage through the wiper circuit.
Could be EMF triggering the relay as suggested above but it'd have to be pretty strong I'd have thought.

Might be time to get the Multimeter out and test for any voltage leakage elsewhere on the wiper circuits when that stransmit button is pressed, you may then be able to track it down.
You could try a different earth too, try temporarily earthing the CB at the battery. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Just realised I left some key information out sorry Whistle

It's fine when connected directly to the battery, so guess that rules out antenna cable / grounding etc?

Depends on where you made the connections for both polarities when the wipers come on.
Try a battery earth and power via the lighter feed I think you said.
If it is fine it's the earth connection at fault, if not you know then it's the positive side of the lighter feed.

It's a traceability issue in the existing circuits it seems, I assume the CB works perfectly directly connected to the battery so if that's the case you know that is not at fault. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thanks for the help I took the "easy" route out and wired directly to the battery! All working as it should now.
