From his vehicle icon, it looks like a 2.4. Darren

Sorry, 300 Tdi Defender, I also have a 2.4 TDCi. I think I found the problem, wiggling the exciter/power wires on the alternator checking voltage it works and then doesn't, looks like a poor connection.

I can't really complain, I bought it brand new 21 years ago and it's survived the worst Oz has thrown at it, and starts first crack of the key and uses no oil after 523,000km's.

What I will be asking soon is which turbo option is the best, VNT or new cassette.

Well just a heads up, no joy so far, I've even replaced the alternator and still get no voltage output. I don't understand actually because the brand new alternator has zero output even when I run 12V directly to the exciter plug. It's got me stuffed.

During an engine swap on a 200tdi, Had built up a 200tdi Def block with all new ancillaries. Put it in, wired up and no alt charge. Put in a new loom, still no charge.Put in the old alt and worked fine. Could be a combination of a damaged loom in the first place, and a dead brand new Alt (possible, mine was at least a half decent Bearmach dead on arrival)
I would look at finding the pin out for your engine loom and run a temp cable from the multi pin and see what happens. If the alt won't charge with a direct feed put your old 'known good' alt on for the moment. |

Well had some success today, I disconnected everything and just ran the original wire from the alternator to the battery and hey presto 14.2 Volts, I'd say my second battery, wiring or isolater is the culprit.
