usually parts are manufactured by specialist suppliers, the parts are all bought together then cars built out of said parts.

I doubt LR actually owned any actual machines. And if they did they were probably re purposed rather than destroyed.

are all of JLR production now at Castle bromwich / graz these days? also where is the new factory in slovakia? I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

The body panels were supposedly made at Solihull until July 2016 to create a stock to cater for the demand for the next 15 years. They were basically the only thing LR made on site, with everything else being outsourced. 10 years is the legal requirement but LR stated they'd do 15.

Interesting that the building is being reused - they'd previously said it'd be demolished.

I believe that JLR historic vehicle division committed to having every part for every Jaguar ever produced available to its customers. I may be wrong but think I read this a while back.

From when I did the Defender tour in Jan 15 the body in white had tooling to stamp shape and spot weld the body parts. This is what they said they would stock pile. The only real robots on the line were there. That was in the cell to weld the bulkhead.
The assembly tracks were very basic in the old Rover building and used a lot of human intervention. The building is listed so there is limitations on the extent of rebuilding. It is small as production sites go. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Many years ago we were on the Trent and Mersey Canal somewhere around Stoke. The canal passed through the corner of what I think was a steel rolling mill (if I recall correctly). The first time it was alive with people, cranes, noise, pyrotechnics!, the second time it had shut and it was very quiet and empty. I went through the same area about five years ago and I couldn't even remember where the building was.

Interesting fact Procta about scraping the tooling. That was what the American's did after they built the Blackbird SR71

It must work. I've never heard of anyone making another Laughing

I know this is "off topic", but at the very mention of "SR71 Blackbird" I just can't help myself,....what a machine!

I did it, back in 2011, I'd had a few ciders too many and was playing with microcat.... decided to see how much a Td5 90 hard top (basic farmer spec) would cost in "parts"

£71,597 Rolling with laughter

Here's the parts list if anyone's interested....

Interesting parts list and it must have taken you an age to compile Thumbs Up However, nowhere on that list can I see any mention of the special Lode Lane Spiders fitted to all Defenders and their cost, a very serious omission if you do not mind me saying so Laughing
This could have easily been included in a miscellaneous section. Mine came with not only a couple of spiders but a caterpillar as well, though as mine was a 'Special Vehicle' I am not sure all normal Defenders had a caterpillar included Smile For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

When I went in late 2015 it was like that, most of the body and the whole bulkhead made on site, bulkheads by robot (mainly - ex disco 1 reprogrammed apparently) and most of the body by hand. I think HCPU tubs and roof panels were made off site and brought in, as were chassis, engine etc, but much was actually made in-house. 2011 110 USW

Lol!!...Love my Supercars, 3 days solid coverage from Tasmania this weekend via Foxtel. The set up, pit work, "tuning" the car, practise, qualifying etc is sometimes more interesting than the race. 24/26 V8s hurtling around, each with 650hp+ has gotta be good,.......but I reckon a Blackbird flying over at say 100' would drown 'em all out?!

I was there in Nov. 2015. I recall there were 3 robots welding bulkheads, there was 1 robot laying seam sealer on the door frames to attach the skins. Roofs were outsourced and came pre assembled and painted to the factory.

Chassis were outsourced, body panels, seatbox etc. were stamped, assembled and spot welded on site. I would imagine they would keep the stamping dies

With so many of these vehicles still in service, I would think many companies would continue to make parts.

Perhaps JLR still stamps the aluminum and sells the pieces to a company that assemble replacement pieces? it's a Landrover thing...
