Solved! Garage lights wiring

OK I have found this site full of knowledgeable people and so i thought i would set a little challenge in case there were any sparkies out there.

I have bought a set of industrial florescent lights for a small spray booth project in my garage.

I know i should seek an electrician but i thought as they are just replacing a standard batten style strip light it would be a case of simply swapping them over.

However wired it up and nothing, it has power but no light. thinking they were knackered i popped a plug on the other one and plugged it in and nothing, now it could be that they are both knackered but even i am not that unlucky so its probably something i am doing wrong.

For reference they are Petrel series 7 luminaires and the original lights were simply wired in and out with 2.5mm cable back to the consumer unit.

Any advice greatfully received.

Thanks

those are some lights for a garage! Looking at the spec they have a carrier tray that takes the tubes. I would check that that is correctly installed and you are getting voltage to the fittings in the first instance. Are the ballasts correctly installed and the lamps/tubes working?

Hi

Sorry for my ignorance may i ask what does this mean??? "back in 16th 17th days wiring using 3 phase 3 wire for single phase"

I havent opened them up, screw on end caps are proving tough to open but I guess if I have wired them up ok.

Brown to Red
Blue to Blue
Green/Yellow to yellow

Then I guess next step is to check inside!

Well they are not cheap lights, depending on size over a grand.

Now a quick search shows 3 wires + earth on spec sheet here with 230 volts standard PLUS other voltages.

First think is to check the specification plate and see what voltage it is.

16/17th are editions for electrical regulations which sparkies adhere to.

Well they are Petrel Series 7 hazardous area Ex d fluorescent fittings so require a 230v supply so should work as you have had them connected. Maybe tubes need replacing or possible starter inside the fittings.
