Puma stuck in gear (not first)
2007 2.4 90 has been running fine. I was just moving it around on the drive and tried to get in reverse but it is stuck in I think 4th or 5th. Managed to edge it forward riding the clutch. Clutch works fine. Transfer box five. Had a recent clutch and intermediate shaft.

Any ideas? I’ve removed the inspection cover between the seats and the gear lever to see if anything obvious but have gone no further.

Thanks [/list]

stick it in low range, drive it up the road and be a bit clumsy on/ off the throttle. see if that helps? V8 90...WIP

Just tried it again and noticed the clutch has death rattle (again). It was replaced recently to fix exactly that. I didn’t notice any rattle until just now - ie after the sticking in gear issue.
I wonder if this is a substandard part and is possibly the cause of the problem? Or has the problem caused the clutch damage?

tend to always think look at the last job done, previous gearbox removal probably the culprit check all the gear linkage bits and bobs and their adjustment DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Thanks for the responses.

To get to the linkage is it a box out job?

Is that do able at home or is the box too heavy? I’ve managed an LT77 box change with limited access but never done anything like this on a 4x4.

I’ve stripped down everything from the gear stick down to the selector. Everything above the gearbox is fine. The gearbox selector is stuck. It seems to be positioned to the left (see picture) but it’s not stuck in first - definitely a higher gear. I’ve removed both detent plugs on the left side of the box. I’ve tried to move the shaft forward but nothing is moving.

Any ideas?

Phone the garage that did the clutch replacement? I wouldn’t interfere with it if it’s down to installer error.

Sounds like a spring has fallen out of the clutch plate and jammed, or you’ve the early style detents that have failed

The two detents I’ve removed look to be fine. Also I’m not sure the clutch is making the rattle - could it be because the gearbox is in gear (transfer in neutral). It seems to be the selector that is stuck - coulda broken spring cause that?

Does anyone know whether the larger detent / retainer (about 20mm) on the right of the gearbox is for the 3rd / 4th shaft?
